Can I still have a MMO with an abnormal EKG?

Hi! About a year ago I underwent gastric surgery. I had a ekg before the procedure and my pcp said something about a T wave being upside down (I hope I'm saying it right sorry) the bariatric surgeon also gave me a ekg and I had a successful surgery. Im 32 years old I lost 130lbs I'm currently 250lbs I'm in the gym 5 days a week I have no health problems! Is this something that will get me denied a mmo? Sorry if you see a similar question I don't think it went through the 1 st time.

There may be any number of reasons for EKG abnormalities which would not preclude plastic surgery including a Mommy Makeover.  Medical clearance by a cardiologist would, of course, be required as your safety is the primary concern of every qualified plastic surgeon!

congratulations on your weight loss.  At this point, you understand the importance of having a detailed in office examination and history evaluation by your plastic surgeon.  Learning a patients history of medical issues, evaluating their physical needs, and discussing a patients goals are paramount in the planning process.  It is not uncommon for patients to have EKG or electrolyte abnormalities during their  weight loss journey.  Many times, these abnormalities correct themselves with improved health during weight loss.  The first step is determining what concerns you have (excess skin, contour abnormailities) and what your goals are with surgery.  Have a discussion with your surgeon, get an examination, and have him/her give you an opinion on what the best surgical options are for you.  Then, the next step will be to determine if you are medically cleared by your physician.best of luckJohn Renucci MD

This decision would have to be made between your plastic surgeon and a cardiologist. Much more information would be required before making such an important decision. Probably, in most cases, it would not prohibit you from having surgery in a safe fashion.

Thanks for your inquiry and excellent question, it is best you see your primary care doctor and get medical clearance. If he/she feels you need to see a cardiologist, then it will be recommended.  EKGs can show the current status of your heart and also a record of issues with your heart in the past that may no longer be a problem.  In addition,  people can have "normal" variants of patterns on an EKG.  In summary,  you could still be an excellent candidate for a mommy makeover, good luck.

Thanks for your question! Some abnormalities that appear on EKG's aren't cause for concern in regards to anesthesia. However, if your plastic surgeon or anesthesiologist deems it necessary, you may need a cardiac workup or cardiac clearance prior to your surgery.
