I keloid when I scar. Do you think I can still get juvederm?

I also have issues wearing lip stick. My lips swell and chap with all lip stick. I can wear chap stick and anything with no color added. Do you think I would have a reaction with juvederm.

Having authored the chapter in text of plastic surgery that all plastic surgeons in North America read, I could tell you that you would need to be seen for an evaluation with a keloid scar expert in the area prior to any treatment as such.  Keloids could happen almost anywhere if you have the affected gene.  However, majority of the time patients self diagnose having a scar as keloid.  Also I assess degree and severity of keloid formation easily and make recommendations to patient prior to treatment.  So again you need proper evaluation and treatment by an expert.  Keloids are extremely rare in mucosal areas such as lip but could occur on lip borders if you are prone to keloid after a skin cut or trauma.

Just because you have a propensity to keloid should not prevent you from getting filler in the lips. However, you do want to see a very experienced injector. This is truly the key to a successful outcome.

Just because you have a tendency to keloid does not mean that you can not have filler in your lips. My best advice would be for you to schedule an appointment with a board certified plastic surgeon or cosmetic dermatologist to be assessed. Great results really come down to the skill of the injector. There are also quite a few new fillers on the market that are great for the lips such as Volbella. Best of luck.

However, if you are forming keloid scars with even small incisions or needle marks, for example a blood draw, then you would want to be cautious. Also, allergies to HA fillers are very uncommon. We've never had an issue injecting people with Juvederm, even if they are prone to scarring or keloids.  Ultimately, any adverse effects mostly depend on the skill of the injector, since we've encountered no issues with allergies.

It is uncommon for keloids to form after needle pricks. This applies to injecting fillers, botox or withdrawing blood for laboratory tests/PRP.

These issues you describe likely will likely not be a contraindication to getting Juvederm. If your lips swell easily plan for a little more downtime just in case you swell more after your injections as well. I certainly wouldn't worry about the keloid concern fo just needle pokes on your face.

It is highly unlikely that you will be allergic to jevederm and even that can be tested. As far as I know in my 22 years of experience with HA fillers, keloids are never a problem.Good luck from NYC

Not a problem with keloids, in fact I often treat keloid patients with acne scarring with Juvederm (atrophic and tethered scars), so having keloids does not prevent you from having Juvederm injections.
