What are the prerequisites for breast augmentation?

The requirements before
heading into surgery vary depending upon your plastic surgeon's, your general physician’s
requirements, and your medical and family history. Please defer to your chosen
board certified plastic-surgeon for their specific pre-operative requirements
well in advance of your scheduled surgery as each surgeon's requirements may
differ slightly.
For example, at our
clinic, it is required that our patients receive clearance in advance of their
procedure which includes a bloodwork, an EKG, and a letter from their physician
stating that they are cleared and safe to undergo the proposed procedure.
If you are younger than
40 and you do not have any family history of breast cancer, then a mammogram is
not necessary prior to breast augmentation.  After 40, any plastic surgery
involving the breast (augmentation, implant exchange, reduction, or lift)
should be preceded by a mammogram within the last year of the surgery date.
After age 40, you will
need mammogram once every 2 years and once a year after the age of 50.
Please note that after getting a breast implant, you may
be referred to have MRIs done as opposed to mammograms because the latter may increase
the risk of implant damage/rupture due to compression forces.

Thank you for your question.Pre-operative testing requirements will vary depending upon your plastic surgeon's requirements, those of your clearing medical physician (generally your primary care physician), and your general health profile.  In my practice, all patients are required to present to their primary care physician for medical clearance in advance of their procedure, which includes bloodwork, and EKG, and a letter from their physician stating that they are cleared and optimized for their proposed procedure.  In the case of breast related procedures (breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction), patients 25 years of age or older will also have to present for a mammogram.  For patients with no prior history of breast cancer, mammograms are generally accepted if performed within a year of their proposed date of surgery.Please defer to your chosen board certified operating surgeon for their specific pre-operative requirements well in advance of your scheduled surgery as each surgeon's requirements may differ slightly.  I hope you find this helpful and I wish you all of the best.

Up to the age of 40 if you have no family history and are low risk for breast cancer you do not need a preoperative mammogram.  Mammograms should be ok for 6 months.

Dear Amanda,   I have been in practice for over 29 years and performed breasts augmentation with implants on thousands of patients. As long as my patients are healthy and under the age of 45, they do not required any tests of physical exam before surgery.    In regard to mammogram, since you are under the age of forty and do not have family history (mother, sisters) of cancer, it is unnecessary for you to get mammogram and by doing so, you are getting less cumulative radiation. After age 40 m you will need mammogram once every 2 years and once a year after the age of 50.   There is another important issue that you did not ask about, but it is critical for you. Not all results are the same, because experience, skills and aesthetic eye are mandatory for good outcome . So do your due diligence carefully and choose your surgeon wisely, to avoid bad result and need for corrective surgery.   Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons  who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Most importantly, check the before and after pictures in the photo gallery, to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive with nice cleavage, perky, symmetrical and natural looking.                                 Best of luck,                                                     Dr Widder

Very good question. I recommend a a first baseline mammogram beginning at 40, and then every other year between 40-50 then every year thereafter. Unless, there is a strong family history of breast cancer in which case I would recommend the first baseline mammogram at age 35. I think the mammogram should be done any time prior to surgery. You should also be aware that all types of implants cn interfere with the visualization of breast tissue by mammogram. After breast augmentation it is important to inform the mammogram center that you have implants. The technician should use the Eckland technique to see the most amount of breast tissue possible. Ultrasound and MRIs are not affected by implants so these can always be performed if needed.

Thanks so much for reaching out.  You do not need a mammography before getting a breast augmentation. Unless of course you're over 40 years old in which case in mammography is part of routine screening. If you do however have a 1st° relative who had cancer had an early age it is recommended that you get mammography earlier than routine screening.  I hope this helps :-) 

In our center, for women over 40, we require a mammoth within a year.  For those younger, it depends on their family and personal history.  Insurance policies will differ form one to another, so there's no standard rule on that.

Hi amanda.tru.  No, mammograms are not required always.  Your surgeon will evaluate your family history, personal history of masses, etc. and take into consideration the incision and whether the implant is placed above or below the muscle before suggesting a mammogram.  Young patients under the age of 40 with no risk factors for breast cancer and an IMF incision with sub muscular implants will not need a  mammogram necessarily.  The recommendations start to vary over the age of 40.  Studies within one calendar year of the date of surgery are acceptable.  Best wishes on your upcoming procedure.
