4 weeks post-op. Is it normal to have stitches poking out? (Photo)

Question

4 weeks post op. Just went in for my 4 week post op yesterday and my PS pulled a couple of stitches that were poking out. When I got home I noticed on the one side I can see another stitch poking out. I'm assuming there is a reason that he left this how it is but just wanted to make sure.

It is sometimes seen to have spitting sutures 4 weeks post operation. The answer to your question may be that it wasn't there at the time of the exam or that it is not ready to fully come out yet. You can always go back so they trim it down if it is bothering you. I do recommend you consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in regards to any concerns or questions you may have. Make sure to always go to all of your follow ups that are scheduled with your doctor, especially after surgery. Best wishes during your healing process!

Thanks for your inquiry, it i possible your surgeon did not see it or could not get it as it was under your skin at that time.  Call and discuss with your surgeon's office and best of luck.

Thank you for your question and photo.  Your surgeon probably just missed this suture.  I leave the suture "tails" out on either end and then trim them in the office during a follow up.   In some cases, the suture does not dissolve and can work its way out through the skin.  These are minor problems that your surgeon can easily fix for you. Sutures coming through the skin is not uncommon so there is no need to worry. As regards your questions on why a suture that you noticed coming through the skin was not removed by your plastic surgeon during your office visit to remove others, the answer can be either: 1. it was not poking through the skin at the time you were in the office  2. the doctor did not see it at that time.You can contact his office and arrange for this suture to be removed.Steven Turkeltaub, MD

I think you may want to have him remove that suture as well. It is not uncommon for some of the buried sutures, that typically dissolve over time, to erupt to the surface. It is not a significant issue in the long run.
