Is it normal to experience hand numbness on both hands after a breast lift with implants?

Hi, I had a breast lift with implants done about 3 weeks ago and ever since I’ve been experiencing numbness and tingling on both my hands at random times throughout my day sometimes night the first week I figured it was normal due to the surgery but now I’m becoming more worried since it’s on week 3 and it hasn’t gone away, should I be worried is it normal?

Thanks so much for reaching out. Can happen from compressing on a nerve during surgery from the positioning that you were in.  This should progressively get better on its own.  Definitely contact your surgeon and go over your complaints so they can come up with a plan.I hope this helps :)

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your hand numbness.  This would not be a common complaint following a breast lift and augmentation and I would advise discussing your symptoms with your surgeon.  At times patient positioning during the procedure may place tension on some of the nerves in your neck and arms, and needs to be ruled out.  Hope this helps.

Numbness 3 weeks after BAM and BL does tend to improve over the course of a year.  For most patients, this is temporary, A nerve injury due to positioning during surgery may be the reason.  Schedule a follow-up with your PS if this continues to be an issue.

Bilateral hand tingling and numbness post breast augmentation is not common, but does occur.  Usually it is from the pressure on the chest extending to the arms.  Rarely, it may be from arm position during the procedure. It usually resolves over time.  Make sure you speak to your surgeon and have them examine you as well.Dr T

Hi and welcome to our forum!
Congratulations on your recent surgery. The breast augmentation / lift procedure requires undermining of the soft tissues of the chest at both superficial and deep planes. This traumatic "insult" to the tissues will cause swelling which is most likely responsible for the sensory alteration you are experiencing. 60-80% of the swelling will subside by the 6th week with the remainder slowly subsiding over 6-12 months. If the sensory loss is absolute (not just "pins and needles"), if it becomes constant, or if it persists, I recommend you visit your plastic surgeon for evaluation and treatment.
