How safe is it to have long-term maintenance injections of Dysport?

I personally don't think that regular use of Dysport causes any health issues, and the research bears this out. In fact, often regular patients find they need their injections somewhat less frequently. Whatever works best for a particular patient is what I aim for. As far as the "dry eyes" question. From a technical, anatomical perspective, the orbicularis muscle is complex, and one portion of it does in fact contribute to lacrimation (tear formation.) However, if done properly, this is not a problem.What you are doing is safe, and I hope I have allayed your concerns.

There is no cumulative affect of neurotoxins.  the only thing could happen is that you become resistant to neurotoixn. This happen to very few patients. This means that the neurotoxins may not work for you. So there is no worry at all. We have been injecting patients since 1970's for medical purposes with no issues. I personally have been injecting some patients since 1999 every three to 4 months with no issue or problem.  

Long term injections with neurotoxins are safe, even at high doses. They do not "build up" in your system as they go directly into nerve cells and stay there immediately after injection.  You have nothing to worry about!  Keep getting those injections.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Dysport, like Botox and Xeomin, lasts on average for 3-4 months.  So, the frequency of your treatments is completely normal.  Dysport will not "build up" as the toxin/protein leaves your system after it does its thing on the nerve fibers it targets.If the Dysport is injected too close to the lacrimal gland, it can
decrease tear production and cause dry eyes. If Dysport is injected in
significant quantities to the muscle under the
lower eyelid, you can be left with some difficulty closing the eyes,
which can also contribute to dry eyes. This is because the muscle is no
longer able
to contract or tighten as before the treatment.  It's rare that this stuff occurs with an experienced injector, but you can
lubricate your eyes with artificial tears until the Dysport wears off. I
feel only "core" injectors should perform cosmetic injectables (facial
plastic surgeons, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, or occuloplastic
surgeons). This is because we all have a keen understanding of facial
anatomy and the effects of injecting Botox/ Xeomin/ Dysport and fillers
in different

Dysport is a very safe neuromodulator that has been FDA-approved and used for many years. There is no research to indicate that Dysport would cause any damage from being used long-term.

We have been injecting toxins for many years now, and routinely some of our patients have had 2-4 injections per year for upwards of 20 years. No problems are known with long-term use, and many report that patients who use toxins for a long time will stop having "those" wrinkles.

Dysport, like the other neuromodulating drugs Botox and Xeomin, is an extremely safe product with longterm use. Just think that the average patient with cerebral palsy (for which Botox is FDA approved) receives as much in a single session as the average cosmetic patient would in 5 years, with no significant reported side effects.

Some patients have received therapeutic Botulinum toxin injections  for over 20 years without any significant problems so it is very safe even at the higher dosages that medical indications often require over cosmetic indications.  It is typical for the non-forehead areas to get repeat injections every 3-4 months.  The forehead area often lasts longer between 4-6 months depending upon dosing.  Botulinum injections around the eyes can directly effect the lacrimal (tear) gland under rare circumstances, but more commonly causes dryness by weakening the orbicularis muscles that close the eyes.  These muscles are also responsible for the crows feet wrinkles.   Best regards.

Botox was the first neuromodulator used, and it has been around for over 20 years. So some people have had repeat injections every 3-4 months of Botox for this long. Although Dysport is newer in the U.S. it has been around overseas for much longer and has the same safety ratings for repeat use. Many people develop drier eyes as we age, and that's just a fact of life. If you stick with core injectors the likelihood of having dry eyes from Dysport specifically is very low.
