Is inner eyelid swelling normal at day 4 of Halo/BBL treatment? (Photo)

Question

Inner eyelids started swelling at the end of Day 3, so I started taking Benadryl last night. I woke up this morning with swollen eyelids. The swelling went down some earlier in the day but the inner eyelids remain swollen. Benadryl doesn’t seem to help much. Should I be concerned?

Swelling is normal after a laser resurfacing procedure. And, because the skin around the eyes is thin, and more delicate, swelling generally tends to develop in this area - even if the laser wasn't used around the eyes. So - it seems from the photo, that you are in the normal range of healing. If the swelling persists, or becomes associated with pain or other changes, I recommend that you contact the doctor who did the procedure. On the benadryl - although this may help a little with the swelling, oral anti-histamines won't work like magic. The only real way to have the swelling go down, is to give it time. . .

Hello, thank you for your question and your picture. One of the biggest side effect with the Halo treatment is swelling. In my practice we tell our patients swelling could last up to a week, and the areas that get the most swollen is around the eyes and mouth area. Taking Benadryl is a great idea, and something else I would add would be to sleep with your head elevated with a couple pillows. Based on our picture the swelling seems normal for the day that you are in your healing process. If you find that the swelling is not improving I would recommend you go back to your provider to make sure there is nothing else happening. Hope this helps, Dr. S.

Swelling, particularly around the eyes is fairly common after Halo - especially your first treatment. Cool compresses, elevation and Benadryl can all help as can Tagamet or Pepcid which blocks the secondary histamine system. Contact your doctor immediately if there is pain, discharge, any change in vision or if it isn't resolving in the next day or two.
