Cheek implant vs. Bellafill?

I am Asian, and have very flat face. I was going to get cheek implants until I heard about Bellafill. Please tell me what are some considerations when deciding on which would be the better choice. Thank you!

Volume and contouring of the cheeks can be created with well-placed fillers (Voluma, Radiesse, Bellafill, Contour) and Sculptra. Implants or fat are alternatives. Botox and radiofrequency can help slim and contour the jawline. Liposuction can help slim the face. Ultherapy, J Plasma and rf treatments can provide skin tightening and lift. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a facial sculpting expert. Best, Dr. Emer

It really comes down to diagnosing why the area is flat.  Is it a bone shape issue or is it a soft tissue deficit or both?  What also matters most is achieving the end result that you're hoping to achieve. Changing bone shape is best done with an implant.  Subtler changes and more customized sculpting is better done with Bellafill.  In some instances I would do both. My general advice is, when in doubt, start with filler and go with the more invasive procedures if/when necessary.

Cheek implants may be able to give you a more dramatic result, but they are a surgical procedure that will require recovery time andthe risk of scarring. The main benefits of facial fillers for cheek augmentation are that they are non-invasive, do not require anesthesia, and involve no recovery time or scarring. I would visit a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist to have an in-person evaluation and discuss your options. Bellafil is just one of a number of dermal fillers which may be appropriate for you.

Cheek implants and injectable fillers, such as Bellafill, can both be used to augment the cheeks.  Sometimes, one might be better than the other in a particular patient.  I would say cheek implants could provide more volume, but they need to be placed at specific locations.  Fillers can be placed throughout the cheek so can be used over a larger area.  An exam or photos would be helpful to give you further advice.

This is a good question since a number of patients who are
considering cheek implants wonder about fillers as an alternative but are
generally unaware of Bellafill.  Cheek
implants can provide a lot of volume but involve a surgery.  As a result, there can be complications and
there is no way to know if you will like the results until after the
post-operative swelling has resolved which can be a few months.

Conversely, a filler like Bellafill, which is essentially
permanent can be done in stages until you get to exactly what you want without
overdoing it.  It is essentially
non-invasive and therefore the down time is much less.  Finally, it will usually provide a more
natural looking result at less cost.
