I'm considering hair transplant surgery for a small area of baldness I have on my hairline due to traction alopecia. The area is 1 cm across and 1.5 cm deep. I read online that the average person has 200 follicles per cm^2 so is it fair to say I will have about 300 follicles transplanted? I'm just trying to estimate costs. Thanks for your help!
Answer: How many grafts? Of course you need to be evaluated in person but I suspect 100-200 grafts will cover that area nicely.Your density is probably in the 100-140 hairs per cm2 range.

Answer: How Many Grafts Needed While getting a graft estimate can help you estimate the cost of a hair transplant procedure, there is often more factors that determine pricing. While some hair surgeons do per graft pricing, others (myself included) do a case-by-case pricing. While graft estimates do influence the case by case pricing, there are many other factors that play a role such as quality of donor area and the type of hair the patient has. You should also keep in mind that there is usually a minimum cost to surgical procedures. While 300 grafts is a relatively small number, many of the same steps and procedures have to be done to extract 300 grafts as 3000 grafts. For example, surgical set up, sterility procedures, involvement of assistants, etc. The best way to get an idea of the cost is to get a consultation. Some offices offer free quote consultations.

Answer: How many grafts would I need? It is best to have in person consultation with a hair transplant specialist. The surgeon may need to add hair to some neighboring areas that may have been affected by hair loss too. This also helps the transplanted hair blend in with your existing hair that usually has a different texture than your donor hair. Many offices such as our office have a minimum fee for the procedures and most likely the despite of the small number of hair that you need, you may still have to cover that minimum fee.
