What are the risks of having liposuction during your first trimester of pregnancy?

All my patients are pregnancy tested prior to surgery. I am sad they did not do that.  With that said, there is likely very little risk for any problems most likely but she should be seen by a high risk ob/gyne to ensure there are no long term issues throughout the pregnancy.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Thanks for your question. Most practices follow strict guidelines in a way that blood tests are required prior to surgery. You must be deemed in good health by your physician before undergoing any surgery. I'm surprised that the office did not conduct a test on your sister. However, I think your sister should be fine. Please consult with the surgeon.

1. Begin with a board certified
plastic surgeon and visit several offices
2. Seek a surgeon who does at least 100 of these procedures per year
3. Internet discussions do not replace the advice of your physician

Most physicians take extremely conservative views of giving medications or having procedures during pregnancy and breastfeeding.The stress on the body and drugs given during the procedure are not that substantial and most likely are very safe.I don't think your sister should carry any guilt or fear about this.The office should, however, change its policy and request pregnancy tests before surgery.Best of luck,Mats Hagstrom, M.D.

Liposuction is not advisable in
pregnant women. The procedure can expose the fetus and even the mother to
several risks. Having liposuction during pregnancy can cause infection to the
fetus, and allergic reactions, and may even cause birth defects. Hence, it is
advised to wait until 6 months after giving birth before you undergo a
liposuction.
