UTI after breast augmentation, is this associated with an infection? 1 week post op.

I had my breast augmentation one week ago today (350cc unders). I have had no real issues and it's been an ok recovery. Yesterday (6-days post op) I noticed symptoms of a UTI. I have had a few UTI's in the past and am familiar with the symptoms and discomfort. I am wondering if this UTI can be linked to a sign of infection associated with my surgery?

There is not necessarily a direct relation between a urinary tract infection/ irritation and an infection around your implants, and in fact it would be uncommon to have a UTI caused by the breast surgery unless you had a catheter during the operation. That being said, we want to limit the risk of complications with the surgery, so if you are feeling the symptoms of a UTI, please call you primary care physician to get a urine test and antibiotics if necessary.Feel better.

Thank you for your question.  A UTI, or urinary tract infection, is not a sign of infection related to your breast augmentation.  My advice is to follow-up with your primary care physician.  Best of luck.

Thanks for your question. You cannot usually link these two. UTI is hard to get after surgery because many antibiotics concentrate in urine. Symptoms are not enough - you need to see your doctor and get the appropriate tests and treatment if UTI is the cause of your symptoms.

Thank you for your question.  You may be getting a yeast infection if you were on antibiotics after surgery, some can get a UTI from antibiotics but not as common.  If you were catheterized during surgery which is unlikely since the surgery is only an hour on average, it's possible to have gotten it from that.   A UTI would not be connected to your breasts , it may be random since you have had them in the past.  See your primary care provider for a urine test.

While the UTI could have been caused by the catheter during surgery, it is not necessarily the case since you've had a few cases in the past. I would recommend that you contact your plastic surgeon to see what treatment he or she recommends. They might send you to your primary care physician.

Developing a UTI after surgery can happen.  There could be a number of causes such as a catheter placement or being on antibiotics.  The breast surgery per se typically does not lead to a urinary tract infections.  Since you have a history of UTIs I would not be too alarmed.  Please contact your plastic surgeon to further discuss the issue.  Make sure you are seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon.  Take care,Timothy A. Since you have a history of UTI s before your breast surgery your present episode is just like your other episodes of UTISee your primary care doctor to get treated.

There are many causes for a UTI and having a breast augmentation isn't one of them.  Sometimes being on antibiotics can lead to a UTI so discuss this with your plastic surgeon and good luck.
