Tummy Lipo and BMI - I was told I need to have BMI of 33 to get procedure. Mine is 40. Do I have other options?

At a BMI of 40, you are at a high risk for complications. However, liposuction can be done to safely remove 10 lbs.

Ideal candidates for liposuction are at or near their ideal weight and have good skin elasticity. Liposuction is not a weigh loss procedure. You will see a change in inches rather than in pounds. Most plastic surgeons look for a BMI close to 30 to ensure maximum results and to decrease the risks of complications during and after surgery.
A BMI of 35 is probably the upper limit that a plastic surgeon would consider for this procedure. It is best to be within 10 pounds of your weight goal for three months prior to the lipo. Discuss a weight loss and exercise program with your PCP.

If you are planning to have children in the future it is best to wait to have a tummy tuck. Future pregnancies could alter your results. Until then you can focus on reducing your BMI. Liposuction can only address the fatty areas that are in front of the abdominal wall. The fat behind is addressed through weight loss.
