I was told by a clinic in Miami that I should have my lipo done in a hospital with no explanation. Would you let me know if I am not a candidate for lipo 360, BBL and tummy tuck? Otherwise I have no health conditions. I am 38 years old, 135lbs, and have had 2 children with no complications. 1 child (son) G6PD however I was never diagnosed even though I also have nephews that are G6PD.
Answer: I am a carrier of G6PD and can I safely get lipo 360, BBL and a tummy tuck? Thank you for sharing your question. Your G6PD needs to be thoroughly understand and evaluated for the severity of the disease as a portion of the liposuction medications used may need to be avoided in you, as well as certain types of anesthesia. It is likely safer to have your procedure done in a hospital setting to manage any issues that arise.

Answer: TT candidate Dear Passionate972658, you will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to surgery. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations. The enzyme deficiency can of different grades and oxidative stressors can cause hemolytic crises. During anesthesia and post operative pain management patient needs to avoid drugs that can precipitate hemolytic crises. Answer: Glucose six phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency Patients with glucose six phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency are at risk for hemolysis in certain conditions. Some foods and drugs leading to increased oxygen radicals like hydrogen peroxide formation. This can be very damaging to red blood cells with this deficiency. You should get clearance from hematologist who should work closely with the surgeon and anesthesiologist to make sure you're not exposed to drugs they can activate hemolysis or a hemolytic crisis. Some of the standard drugs used during surgery can activate this condition. Certain foods like favs beans should also be avoided. You should already know what foods to avoid if you've been diagnosed with the condition. If you're not sure then talk to your primary care doctor or consult with a hematologist. Being well educated on foods to avoid and having the doctors involved know what drugs to avoid is probably the mainstay of precaution. Plastic surgeons may be familiar with this condition on a rudimentary level but the expert to help guide the decision making should be a hematologist. It may be prudent to do this in a hospital setting as opposed to an outpatient surgery center. These are decisions your plastic surgeon can make in conjunction with your hematologist. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
