it is almost impossible to do this even with general anesthesia if doing tumesecent liposuction and using blunt tipped cannulas. This was possible in the past when using sharp instruments and no fluid. Best, dr. Emer.
Although extremely rare per formation of abdominal organs has certainly been reported. It is more common when liposuction is performed by untrained professionals, who luckily are generally prevented from performing liposuction in Ontario at this point. The type of anaesthesia you have doesn't really change the likelihood however it is much more likely to be noticed immediately if it did happen if you were awake. If this is a concern for you, make sure to have a discussion about it with your surgeon (NOT just the clinic's patient care coordinator) long before you proceed with any procedure and make sure you use a clinic where the surgeon is a Royal College certified plastic surgeon and someone who you will be able to meet before your procedure. Many clinics in the city dont actually allow you to meet your surgeon until the morning of surgery and you won't see them again after and these are the places where the complications typically take place. Hope that helps!
It is extremely rare for a person to have a perforation of an organ during liposuction, but it has been reported.
Hello dear, thanks for your important question. It is not very common to see this. Mostly in a person with no prior surgey.. You have to make sure that your surgery is performed by a board certified plastic surgeon.
In a person with no previous surgery or hernias, this would be a very rare complication. Make certain the surgery is done by a board certified plastic surgeon. Most instances that I've seen with this complication were done by unqualified surgeons.
Great question. The answer to is it possible.. yes.. is it likely...no. The caveat to this is the expertise of the surgeon. Be sure to consult with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Often, the consultation is free of charge, but if not it will be well worth it. When I hear " office liposuction of the abdomen under local anesthesia" my eyebrows raise a bit. My questions would be, why no anesthesia? why not in a surgery center or hospital?Does this practitioner even have privileges to do this procedure in a hospital? (hospitals make sure that practitioners are experienced in the procedures that they do in the hospital) How experienced is the practitioner. Nowadays physicians, for soley economic reasons, would like to perform more lucrative cosmetic procedures. They may take a weekend course and then hang out a shingle calling themselves an "expert"Be very careful. Although it is legal for them to do so. It is far from ethical and is misleading to the patient who often does not know the right questions to ask. My advice would be to call the local hospitals in your area, speak with the medical staff office and check to see if the physician has privileges to perform the procedure in a hospital. If not.. run away. You may find that your plastic surgeon is really a gynecologist or a family practice physician and not experienced in that surgery at all. Be aware, ask questions. And remember the old adage, "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is".Best wishes,Michael Morrissey, MD
Dear foreveryoung908, Thank you for your clinical post. Fat embolism or pulmonary embolism is extremely uncommon following in-office or in-hospital based liposuction techniques. With modern approaches to liposuction all Ontario liposuction surgeons need to be board certified plastic surgeons....
Thank you for asking about your swollen vocal cords after intubation.I am glad things are improving.Throat lozenges and pastilles, warm tea with lemon and honey, a humidifier to avoid dry air and talking as little as possible will all speed your recovery.Let your surgeon know what happened -...
Swelling is best managed by strict adherence to a low salt diet. Also avoiding excessive activity early in recovery helps. Remember swelling talks time to subside just as healing takes time. Healing takes 6 to 12 months to mature. My Best, Dr...
