What will IV sedation feel like? Will it put you to sleep or will you still be awake?

I routinely use this type of anesthesia.  You will be asleep and medicine will be given to you so that you don't remember anything.

Liposuction performed under lesson general anesthesia is commonly done. Oral sedation or IV sedation both leave the patient awake but most of the time they have little or no recollection of the procedure. In properly selected patients the discomfort is minimal.

Hello. IV sedation is safe and it is a form of general anesthesia. This means you'll be asleep and not remember what happens during surgery. You should first seek out a plastic surgeon with high quality results and let them choose the safest anesthesia for your case. I have used the same anesthesia doctors and same techniques with excellent outcomes and patients have done very well. Asking a surgeon to do something that they do not do routinely could increases the risks of surgery and anesthesia complications, in my opinion. Best wishes always, Dr. ALDO

IV sedation is one way to perform the procedure.  How deep they make you will determine your state of consciousness.

Thanks for your question.  OF course, this is one for both you and your Plastic Surgeon to decide.I use IV sedation on all of my Plastic Surgical procedures.  The patient is sedated, feels no pain and wakes up quickly without nausea and vomiting.  I would suggest having a board certified anesthesiologist admisister the IV anesthetic.Best of luck.Dre Taranow

Thanks for your question. If I'm doing only liposuction, I find patients do very well w/ a small dose of an oral benzodiazepine (eg. Halcion). If you want deeper sedation, then IV can be considered if it's being monitored by a trained anesthesia professional in an accredited center. You can essentially request how "deep" you'd like to be. IV sedation is a very safe an effective form of general anesthesia that allows plastic surgeons to perform procedures safely and effectively with minimal postoperative side effects such as nausea and vomiting. It is important for you to seek out a board certified plastic surgeon who uses anesthesiologists to perform the anesthesia. The medications will allow you to be partially awake but you will not remember anything after the procedure is performed. Other medications can be used besides benzodiazepines if needed for sedation. Recovery is typically quicker in the recovery room, so typically the patient spends less time recovering before going home. Also, if the plastic surgeon utilizes proper local anesthesia with your procedure it can significantly decrease your recovery along with the use of IV sedation.You should ask your surgeon if he or she performs many of their procedures with IV sedation. post. This is a common question. I have been performing aesthetic plastic
surgery for 25 years and find that many procedures such as facial rejuvenation
procedures, brow lift, blepharoplasty, face gel and neck lift can be performed
very effective under oral sedation.
Liposuction and skin only body contouring procedures can also be
performed equally effectively under oral sedation where patients have very
little recollection and are quite comfortable.
Rhinoplasty or an osteotomy or breaking the bone must be performed
endoscopic mid face surgery, subpectoral breast augmentation and abdominoplasty
with rectus muscle repair cannot be performed effectively under oral sedation
and IV sedation or general anesthesia is required. IV sedation nowadays generally involves the
use of Propofol and some intravenous narcotic and intravenous Benzodiazepine
with the patient still breathing and protecting their airway, but quite unaware
of the procedure. Generally, anesthesia
is a lack of a patient’s ability to protect their airway and/or above the vocal
cord or below the vocal cord artificial airway ventilation.

Oral sedation in my practice involves
use of Benzodiazepine as well as subcutaneous narcotic gradual administration
of these medications with other anti-nausea sedating medications that most
patients have very little recollection and once the tumescent and local
anesthesia is infiltrated and certainly no pain.

There is no one right anesthetic
technique for all patients and your comfort level, level of anxiety and
preparedness for the procedure is important.
Visiting with your operative surgeon and discussing the anesthetic
options is extremely important.

You would have to ask your surgeon what medications they use for IV sedation cases. Oral sedations are generally some form of a Valium and are just suppose to kind of take the edge off. IV sedation is generally a heavier form of medication and from what I have seen, some patients sleep, some doze and some talk to you them entire time. I guess it comes down to your body's tolerance of the meds.
