Can under eye fillers like Restylane last two years?

The short answer is yes, Restylane can last for 2 years in the under eye area but no, the results do not usually last this long.Generally the results of under-eye fillers last about a year but the hyaluronic acid gel is present for much longer. So you should not necessarily expect to see smooth under-eyes for that full period of time.

Each patient metabolizes fillers at different rates. In most patients under eye fillers will last two years or longer. I have seen several patients where under eye fillers lasted 7-8 years. There are also a small subset of patients who metabolize the filler more quickly and need a touch-up within the first year. Again, everyone is different but for the vast majority of patients, under eye fillers will last two years or more.

   It is true it under eye filler can last for a very long time due to the fact it is in an area which does not move much. Patient's who have filler in an area such as their lip's for example find the injection break's down quicker (makes sense since it is in an area that is constantly moving). It really depends patient to patient based on how their body metabolizes the injection. I would say it would be very fair to say the product will last over a year.

You have valid concerns. I have been injecting fillers for over 13 years and one thing that is certain is that there is variability in how long fillers will last in any one area and for any one patient. The eye area is one area in which fillers last the longest. Fillers in this area "can" last over 2 years, but there is no guarantee on that. (Unless the injecting doctor wants to guarantee that). I would not feel comfortable making that guarantee. In the under-eye area (infra-orbital or tear trough region), no filler is FDA approved to treat this area, so we can not say with 100% certainty how long a given filler will last based on a well controlled trial. We have to rely on our experience. With that being said, what I tell patients is: 1) We have to get the right level of correction. This could mean more than 1 treatment to get you to full correction. Most often, I will treat a patient with 1-2 syringes of fillers and then re-evaluate at 1 month. Some patients will need more at a month. At times, I will layer different fillers on top of the first treatment. 2) Filling Adjacent areas to create an aesthetically balanced and pleasing end result. Many times, the cheek needs to be corrected to help support the under-eye area. Treating the cheek can go a long way to correcting the under-eye area, but often, a true under-eye treatment is needed for ideal correction. 3)What filler is used: Some fillers last longer than others. Vollure can last the longest but some patients have had prolonged or delayed swelling from this product. I personally have not experienced this, but it has been noted by others. So to summarize, yes, fillers in the under-eye/tear trough region can last up to 2 years, but this is highly variable. I prefer to treat to correction, reevaluate at 1 month and fill more as needed and then follow the patient along. This minimizes an over correction and allows for the most natural look as the under-eye is one of the easiest areas to over correct. Then the patient is treated on an as needed basis. If the patient feels they need more at 6 months and I agree, I retreat at 6 months. If it is a year, then we treat at that time.  

Thank you for your question. The duration that a filler such as Restylane lasts depends on the area it is being used, the kind of filler, the patient's conditions and other such factors. While it is uncommon that a filler such as this lasts for two years, it is not impossible. If you are lucky and if your body conditions allow it, it can last for longer than usual. Most often though, it lasts for about a year and maybe a couple months more. 

Thank you for your inquiry. I typically do not quote a two year longevity timeline for Restylane. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 9 months minium, and up to 15 months for that particular area. There are some cases where the product can last up to 2 years. 

Restylane is a good product to use for tear trough deformity and under eye hollowness. Most patients will need 1-2 syringes and it should last up to a year. 

I do think that fillers under the eyes last longer than same filler would last in other areas but length depends on which filler and on patient. I would tell you that if you were lucky it COULD last up to two years but more commonly I see these last a year or maybe year and half. Less commonly, I see these last six months. The good news is that you don't usually need a lot of product under the eyes so it is nit a huge investment. If you want this, give it a try.

This is an excellent question.  The longevity of fillers depend on a variety of factors, including the exact product used, the area being treated, the depth of the injections, the amount of filler injected, and the patient's own metabolism.  Your plastic surgeon is correct - most fillers tend to last longer in the tear troughs and under the eyes, and in many cases Restylane can last two years here.  That said, it's not possible to predict exactly how your body specifically will process the Restylane and whether or not you will need touch-ups before two years.  Best of luck!
