Can gynecomastia return after just 4 weeks post surgery?

Hi I’ve had gynecomastia for close to 15 years since my late teens the worst part was the stretched and puffy nipple area which showed through all my clothing, so almost 5 weeks ago I had my surgery, I felt it went really well even my surgeon seemed happy he told me he removed the gland and also had my areola resided which looked great, but now nearly 5 weeks on I’ve started back gym and fitness training and the lumps seem to be back is this normal or even possible?

Thank you for your question and congratulations on undergoing gynecomastia surgery. It would be very unusual to have your gynecomastia recur after only 4 weeks. Likely, you are feeling residual scar tissue that you are only feeling now after all the swelling has subsided. However, if you have any questions, you should consult with your plastic surgeon and allow him/her to reexamine you. Good luck!

You are still early in the healing process. It takes at least three months to see the final result. It is very common to feel lumps during the healing process. I instruct my patients to massage but you should check with your own surgeon. Hang in there.

5 weeks post surgery is too early for the gland to re-grow, but there are other potential causes of swelling at this relatively early post-op time-point. You should expect a mild degree of swelling right now, and returning to the gym may make the swelling a little worse initially, but if it is more than that I would suggest you arrange a review with your PS for a clinical examination - it could be a fluid collection that requires drainage. It doesn't sound like anything to worry about though!

Those lumps may be residual breast tissue, new breast tissue, fat or simply scar tissue. In my opinion a scan (ultrasound is the easiest one) will help identify the nature of the tissue and then you can see a surgeon and decide what to do
