Would a facelift help with acne scars?

The emotional impact of acne scars is very often more debilitating than the scars. Depending on the appearance and type of scarring, surgical procedures can be very helpful in the treatment plan. Unfortunately, the skin will never look as good as it did before the acne and scars occurred. A facelift may be a great option as a stand alone procedure or in combination with fillers, fat transfer, laser skin resurfacing, PRP, or energy based devices like RF.  A facelift is essentially a more aggressive form of subcision which will also tighten and remove the excess skin which is creating the "accordion" effect that can accentuate the appearance of acne scars.  The best way to know which treatment options will help achieve your desired results is to have an in person consultation with a board certified facial plastic surgeon who has experience in a wide variety of acne scar treatments (including facelifts).  Ask to see before and after pictures. 

While a facelift will help acne scars, it should not be the only reason to do it. Because the facelift undermines the skin it essentially releases the scarring from acne . In addition when the deeper layers of the face are elevated there is a softening of the facial features which helps make the acne scars appear better.

Hi gaildensmore.  If stretching your skin improves the scars, then a lift is a reasonable approach.  I have used this approach successfully. Laser resurfacing will stimulate collagen production so that the scars improve even more-consider doing both.  Seek consultation with an ABPS certified PS who can examine your skin closely and guide you further.  Best wishes,

The bottom line is that stretching the skin as in a facelift will not help with acne scarring. Facelifts and variations of facelifts such as mini lifts, quick lifts, anterior lifts, etc. help with the sagging and lifts the excess tissue. The skin texture is a separate issue and often in patients both areas need to be addressed. If the scarring is your major concern, I would consider laser resurfacing as a very good option. I often perform both procedures on patients and usually recommend the lifting procedure first but the order is up to you if both areas are of concern. Good luck in your area.

a facelift would give your skin a smoother firmer appearance. The firmer appearance would help lessen the appearance of the depressions. Laser resurfacing would also help further improve the appearance.
