How does breast implant exchange recovery time differ from the original breast augmentation?

In general implant replacement has a shorter recovery time because the muscle has already been lifted, and so will need to be stretched less. The major cause of pain after breast implant surgery is muscle stretch and elevation off the rib cage. There is less stretch necessary with implant replacement, and the muscle has already been lifted. Most people feel pretty comfortable within a couple of days unless the revision of the pocket is very extensive.

Typically recovery from implant exchange is much easy then the first surgery as the pocket is already present. I tell most of my patients they can even go back to work in a day or two if they wish. Recovery should be better then you expect.

A simple implant exchange for an implant that is the same size is a very easy recovery. Much much less than the original surgery.In this case, however, the change is to an implant that is nearly twice as large as the original implant. Although the muscle has already been lifted off the chest wall, it will need to be stretched further to accommodate the new larger implant. Further, every time any implant is placed in the body, the body builds a thin layer of scar tissue around the implant (often called the capsule). This capsule although thin and flexible does not stretch. Thus the capsule will need to be surgically removed at the time of implant exchange and the pocket will need to be enlarged to match the new larger implant which will require stretching of the muscle covering the implant. Because of the pocket changes including capsule removal, I would anticipate a recovery that is not unlike the original surgery.We have a number of techniques available to minimize post-op pain and these include the use of very long acting local anesthetics. Using these methods, our patients have done extremely well with minimal discomfort.For the best results seek the consultation of a plastic
surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. They have a website
listing all the certified plastic surgeons. Members of the American Society of
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery will all be board certified in plastic surgery and
have demonstrated an interest and special skill in cosmetic plastic surgery as
well.

In general, if it is just a simple exchange there is often not a lot of post op discomfort and often a lot better than the first go around. However, if the pocket needs to be adjusted or implants placed under the muscle when previously above the muscle, then there might be more pain than after the first surgery.

Routinely, the implant exchange is often less painful than the first procedure, BUT, with the increased size of your implant decision, the pocket often will require enlargement and with this there is the possibility of associated pain.  I often place a drain in each pocket when doing reoperative breast surgery.  Just depends on your situation.  Just choose wisely a Member of the ABPS or ASAPS to be your surgeon, and you'll do just fine.

You will most likely find the recovery easier than the first time around although your large implant choice is likely to limit just how much less difficult.

If your original surgery was under the muscle you may find that recovery is not as bad as the first time.  This can vary depending if the capsule needs to be removed at the same time.
