Are my lips botched or swollen? (Photo)

Question

I had my lips done for the first time a year and a half ago, they had minimal swelling. I have just got them done for the second time and they are HUGE (which I assume is the swelling). It's 3 days later and the swelling hasn't gone down at all. I've only had 1ml put in but they don't look right.

It is likely that these will settle also.  However, considering that they still look pretty big, I recommend contacting your injector and scheduling a follow up for next week.  If the lips settle down over the weekend, you can cancel that visit but if it persists, you will definitely want to be seen.

Thank you for your pictures and question.  Normally the swelling only last for a few days, however there could be different factors which increase swelling; if you are on the period, the injector has massaged them vigorously after, if a thicker filler has been used; for example Voluma. I would follow up with your injector in person to have everything looked at and to make sure things are alright. All The Best

Yes, you have swelling which can last 1-2 weeks after lip injections. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 mins a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. If you're unhappy with your final results you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question.It does appear you have quite a bit of swelling at this time. Did they use the same product you had before or was it is a new product? I would contact your injector and have them evaluate you in person to make sure nothing is concerning. It may just be swelling, but there is no way to know without seeing you in person.

You may still be swollen. Although for some patients the swelling goes away within 24 to 48 hours, others have swelling that takes a bit longer to subside. If you are concerned, I would call the doctor who injected you to have them document your healing, and to see if they have any suggestions.Be sure you are being injected by a board certified plastic surgeon.

I always tell my patients to not love their filler injections for 2 weeks. Swelling is very common and sometimes immediate. It can last 3-7 days and a good idea is to use cold compresses. Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling only if needed. This may be applied for 3 minutes, 3 times per day, for up to 3 days. This is best done with a bag of peas in a zip lock bag. Only apply light pressure to the area but gentle massage might be necessary if the bump is from the filler material itself. Get Arnica gel if you can find some and apply a few times a day as well to help treat any swelling. Avoid any blood thinners. Bruising can also last 1-2 weeks. I don't recommend hyaluronidase this early and wait a few weeks until the swelling has resolved. If it is persistent or you are worried, set up a follow up appointment with your dermatologist.

As you know, it can take two weeks for the swelling to subside. Since it's only been a few days, I would wait and watch. However, if the top lip doesn't start to go down in the next few days then schedule an appointment to be seen in person by your injector.

Some swelling and bruising are to be expected after lip filler treatment. However, you have more swelling then I usually see in my patients. I would followup with your injector in person to have everything looked at and to make sure things are alright. Typically, swellings will go down over the first few days after the treatment but can take up to 14 days to completely resolve. Good luck.
