Thank you for sharing your question.  Dermal fillers placed into the lips help supply additional voluma, shape, and definition to the lips and do not create any significant scarring.  Nearly all the fillers used to accomplish are temporary and will need a touch-up or additional treatment in the future for maintenance.  If you were to allow the filler material to fully dissolve, it would leave you with your original lip appearance. Anne.   Lip augmentation with fillers like Juvederm lasts 4-6 months and does not leave scar tissue, so it needs to be repeated if so desired. They will go back to normal after it goes away.  A more permanent option is fat transfer to the lips, and studies show that at least 50% of fat transferred to the face stays put. Dear annemadsen2:I have only seen scarring after lip augmentation (by which I mean areas of firmness that can be felt) once.  This occurred in a celebrity who had gone to another dermatologist who used a filler that should not be used in the lips, likely Radiesse or Artecoll. We were able to resolve the problem readily with Protopic and Retin-A, and since then she has stuck to Beletero and Juvederm without any problems.  All the best,   Dr. Clark

My experience is that after a couple years of regular lip injections, the lips don't go quite down to baseline. Is this collagen in response to the injections or residual "trapped" filler, I'm not sure. The need for injections goes down over time.
