Am I a good candidate for lip fat transfer?

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph.  Though nearly every patient is a candidate for fat grafting to the lips it is an important discussion that needs to be had with your surgeon.  Fat grafting can successfully be done to augment a patient's overall lip volume, but the results can be unpredictable as the fat that is transferred with increase/decrease in size with your diet and exercise.  Talk to your surgeon about your desires, they can best help advise you.

Fat causes scaring irregularity.  It is highly unpredictable.  Currently your lips are not distorted or misshapened. How will you feel if you have this type of result which is all to common.  This type of common bad outcome is essentially unfixable.  Sure we can operate on the mangled lip and remove the worst of the nodules but your lip will never be the same.  Permanent fillers are not recommended for the lip and that included your own fat.  Do not do this.  The temporary hyaluronic fillers can be adjusted or removed if there is ever a problem and treatment lasts a year.  Carefully the weight the risk of surgery and try not to talk yourself into thing that have a significant potential for causing harm.

great question. At our practice, we perform around 200 fat transfers to the face per year between my associate and I. Fat transfer to the lips does not work very well as it is a biologic filler - meaning it needs blood supply to survive. When placed in large amounts, only some parts of it survive leading to lumps and irregularities. When done conservatively, it does not provide as much augmentation or definition. Be careful when doing lip augmentation with it. Make sure your doc is comfortable with it. Sometimes filler or alloderm work much better to be honest. Best of luck! I hope some of this helps. 

Thank you for the question and photo! Your lips are already beautiful but if you desire more fullness then fat transfer is a great option for you. Fat transfer to the face is very appealing to many patients because it requires only one quick procedure that lasts a long period of time. We harvest healthy fat cells from your abdomen or lower extremities and carefully inject the centrifuged fat into your lips or other desired areas. We are always very conservative in how much fat we inject because this result is permanent and each patient has a different starting point (natural lip fullness). Some patient consider touch up injectable fillers due to possible metabolizing of the fat.

You are a candidate for lip augmentation.  However, lip augmentation does not lead consistent results and as you age you may not be happy with the results.  I would recommend a hyaluronic acid filler like Restylane or Juvederm for the best cosmetic results. Best, Dr. Green

I personally do not like fat grafting due to the unpredictable survival of fat. In addition fat keeps the memory of were it comes from making potential deformities a significant risk. The use of fillers is more reliable.







Finally, make sure that you have a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.

Fat transfer is s great procedure and it works well in the lips. Some physicians do not believe it works well in the lips.  However, I know it works well in the lips and it gives a long lasting great result.  Caution must be used to not overfill the lips because the fat does live and stay in the lips.  Some surgeons do not have good results, but there are many surgeons who get great results.  When I perform facelifts, I always inject the lips at the same time because the lips usually need some volume.  Just as fill can be used, Fat transfer works very well in the lips. It gives a shapely result and long lasting as well
