Would a genioplasty help achieve a more symmetrical face? (Photos)

Question

I had braces before and have been on permanent retainers for over a year now. I would like a permanent advancement of my chin to have more asymmetrical sides and harmony. I consulted with a facial plastic surgeon who recommended a chin implant to advance it and create the illusion of a more contoured jaw. Now I am deciding on other surgical options. Am I a candidate for genioplasty given my profile?

You are a candidate for a genioplasty. We almost always recommend them over an implant. Looking at your profile, your chin is short and slightly recessed. By bringing it forward and down, it would help to bring balance to your profile, while elongating and adding definition to your jawline.  This would give your face more of an overall "v" shape. You may potentially consider buccal fat removal as well, which would remove some of the extra fat in your lower cheeks and take a little weight off your jowls. You have a recessive chin so you are a candidate for a chin implant or sliding genioplasty. To improve the symmetry, I would recommend simultaneous jawline and submental liposuction. You will need to assess the advantages and disadvantages of each procedure. In cases similar to yours, I usually prefer the sliding genioplasty over an implant.

I see no reason why you can’t have a genioplasty. Forward augmentation will deepen your labiomental fold. This may limit how much advancement the procedure. Can have.
Consider consulting with oral surgeons and plastic surgeons in your community.
My experience is that oral surgeons tend to do more sliding genioplasty and plastic surgeons tent to favor implants more often. Both providers should be able to do both procedures but some plastic surgeons may not have a lot of experience with the sliding genioplasty.
