Sliding genioplasty. What is the ideal chin projection?

Interested in sliding genio… 1. Can you remove the bolts after the bone heals if you don’t want foreign objects in face because bone is just as sturdy after healed? Does the bone fuse and look normal after 2. What’s the ideal chin projection? Is rickets asthetic line correct for that? 3. When the chin bone is slid away from the jaw is there like a divit under ur chin where it’s slid away or does that fuse too?

After a genioplasty, the bone takes about 6 weeks to heal. After that, if you prefer to remove the hardware, you can. It is however another procedure to remove them which can create more scar tissue. The bone will heal in the gap and look and feel normal. The only way to know if you had a genioplasty is with an xray. Initially after surgery, you will be able to feel (not see) a slight step off where the incision in the bone is made. This will sooth itself over time or it may be smoothed down during during the procedure if the advancement us large. The amount of projection is dependent on the amount of recession of the chin. The bones fuse together like a fracture so the plate and screws can be removed at a later date. Initially, patients can feel a step on each side but it is not noticeable and blends over time. A sliding genioplasty allows for up to 9-10 mm of projection and can also be used to increase height if needed. With large advancements, the sliding genioplasty provides the most natural results.

You want to do cephalometric analysis to determine how many millimeters to bring the chin out. It . They are typically not removed. The bone will heal, infuse, and appear normal once you are healed. There should not be a divot at the site where the bone is advanced. Some surgeons use a hydroxy appetite paste at this site.

Here are the answers:
(1) Can you remove bolds. Sometimes, but usually not worth it because there is a lot of work involved in doing that (a second surgery).  Does the bone fuse?  Usually, but not always completely.  Does it look normal? If done well.
(2) Ideal chin projection is based upon your gender, desires, lip position, and dental occlusion.  A facial plastic surgeon can help you decide together.
(3) Good insight - yes, often. That's why in many cases a chin implant is safer, easier, and smoother afterwards (plus more easily reversible).
