12 days post-op, is it safe to clean my nose with a q-tip?

It is my recommendation to my patients to not use Q-tips in the nostrils after surgery as this can introduce an infection in the nose.  It is important to refer to your surgeon for their post-operative instructions particularly so soon after surgery.

It should be fine but please consult with your Dr.  At 12 days, you should be well healed inside your nose and a Q-tip should not damage anything if done gently.

I usually advise against using q-tips for a few weeks after a Rhinoplasty procedure. Please discuss your concerns with your Plastic Surgeon and follow his advise. All The Best !

I encourage you to discuss any post operative wound care questions with your surgeon as each doctor has their own specific instructions. Some prefer you avoid putting anything into the nose as you could increase risk of infection. 

Thanks for the great question. Using a Q-tip around the inside of the nostril area should not be a problem and it is good to keep the area clean as it heals. However, I would caution you to put anything further up into the nasal cavity as this could lead to damage. It is best to follow your surgeon’s instructions for your rhinoplasty recovery to ensure a safe healing process and an optimal outcome from your procedure. Good luck to you!

Thank you for your question. If you have any questions about your recovery instructions, please call your board certified facial plastic surgeon and medical team to confirm. I cannot stress enough the importance of following your surgeon's recovery instructions. We recommend that our patients use washcloths that have been soaked in ice water, folded in an inverted 'V' configuration and fit right into the area that needs the ice pack because it can be easily draped over the nose and contour over these areas without putting too much pressure on the nose. Again, it is key that you and your surgeon are on the same page when it comes to your recovery.

Thank you for your question.  I would check with your surgeon on this specific question.  Every physician will have a different protocol for his/her post-operative care.  However, I have my patients apply ointment to the nose during the healing process with a q-tip, and this works very well.  I would continue to use the nasal saline spray, as well. Again, if there is any concern, check with your surgeon for evaluation.I hope that this helps!-David Gilpin
