Eyelid surgery/ local vs general anesthesia? (Photo)

Question

Is local anesthesia common for eyelid surgery? Is it considered safer than general? Would I benefit from a fat transfer for lower eye area? Could both be done with local? Thank you!

You can definitely get local anesthetic only for some eyelid procedures... it might be a lot for some other eyelid procedures! Local is always safer than general. Fat could help for your case.

I recommend general anesthesia for you for your lower eyelids. I also recommend fat repositioning. Your fat pads on the lower eyelids can be released and allowed to fall into the tear trough to fill out the hollow. You would also benefit from an upper blepharoplasty which can be done at the same time.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is nearly painless with local anesthetic and this is a preferred method. Since you appear to have an Asian eyelid appearance, the expertise of your facial plastic surgeon or oculoplastic surgeon would be most important. We are not proponents of fat grafting to the under eye area due to the thinness of lower eyelid skin. Hope this helps! Sincerely, Dr Joseph

You can have surgery locally on your upper eyelid and lower eyelid. It does not require general anesthesia. There is no harm in fat injection for the pits under the eyes, which can be done in the same session.

In our practice, we can perform most upper eyelid surgery under local anesthesia and patients tolerate it quite well. Regarding lower eyelid surgery, patients are not able to tolerate removal of the fat bags in the lower lids, so we used general anesthesia when performing lower lid surgeries.

What you’re requesting is basically a full consultation.
I suggest you avoid relying on simplistic answers to what our in fact fairly complex.
There are advantages and disadvantages to all the variables you’ve included. All of them can be done with General anesthesia, local anesthesia, or with some form of sedation.
 All these different variables have risks and benefits and one is not better than the other
First and foremost I don’t see why you’re having surgery but that’s having in person consultations until the provider needs then follow their recommendations.
