Kybella during (unknown!) pregnancy

Question

I just found out I am 6 weeks pregnant. Two weeks ago I had Kybella injected into my chin and am now concerned about the potential impact on my then 4-week pregnancy. I know there hasn't been many studies on this so any input from the community of doctors is greatly appreciated.

Hi, it is scary when we don't know we are pregnant and have had stuff done.  But you should be fine.  It is true not enough or anything is known about kybella and pregnancy.  But what is known is that generally things don't affect a fetus at 4 weeks.  Think about all those unknown pregnant moms smoking, drinking, drugs etc.  usually the embryo goes untouched that early in pregnancy.  The effects of "stuff" can occur after 8 weeks.  So considering kybella was local, you should be fine.  But I personally would not recommend any injectable cosmetic products during pregnancy to be on the safe side.  The stress from you worrying will be a lot worse.  So take a deep breath and know you haven't done anything to hurt your unborn child! It would not be recommended to undergo Kybella with a known pregnancy because there are no studies to investigate this interaction, but I doubt that you did any harm to your unknown fetus when you had your treatment.  The Kybella should stay just locally where it was injected and not travel to your fetus.

We all avoid performing injections during pregnancy because of liability if something goes wrong and there is nothing to prove if it is correlated or not. There should be no harm to your baby or pregnancy since Kybella is localized treatment that only affects 1 centimeter squared around its injections site. the first and thus-far only FDA-approved non-surgical injectable treatment for
the double chin. It is important to share with your doctor your medical history prior to injections. This includes sexually activity without contraception. There have been no studies on Kybella in women who are pregnant. Therefore the safety and efficacy of Kybella in this group is not established. Please
consult with an obstetrician for specific recommendations. Good luck!

There are no studies as of yet as to whether or not Kybella affects pregnancy. Which is both the good news and the bad news. I honestly don't think that you need to worry, but let your Ob Gyn know about your injections just to be safe. Congratulations.

In general, cosmetic injectibles are not recommended during pregnancy, including Kybella. Although there are no studies of Kybella in pregnant women, I think it would be very unlikely that there would be any problem with your developing fetus related to Kybella injection. The product is deposited and acts locally. It should not have an effect on the rest of your body or the fetus. It is always good to check with your doc with any concerns. Like others, I believe this should be OK, however the PI or Product Information for Kybella- Belkyra states no pregnancy (ie. Not indicated in lactation and pregnant women). The product is localised to the area, and placental cross over is vvv low, if any, no studies in this context.
