Can I take a 3 hour bus journey the following day (after GA)?

Question

I am having surgery which I will be 'under' for around 90 minutes at most. This is being done in the evening around 6pm. I am not telling anyone about my surgery, and I know many will tell me I need to have someone, but I really can't bring myself to tell anyone. I am a really private person, and this is being done 3 hours away from my home (it was my closest option). Would it be possible the following day to get the bus home (would take 3 hours)? Thank you in advance.

You don't mention what procedure you are having, but you need to discuss these issues with your surgeon immediately. How are you getting to and from the surgery? Who will be with you after surgery? The surgeon's office may be able to help you arrange an aid to help you after your procedure. If you were my patient, I would suggest you not travel the next day by bus since you may still have anesthesia effects for 24 hours, may be nauseated, etc.

It is essential to have a responsible caretaker post-operatively to assist a patient. I recommend that you have a family member, a friend someone who you trust take care of you post-op. Your concept of the importance of your procedure and it's time of the day and your idea of bus ride post-op with no assistance - it could be life threatening. It's sounds like that from your 90 min anesthesia you will be having a major operation. For a major operation - adequate post-op care is essential and your plan could cost you your life and I would not provide a service to a patient knowing this would occur.

It is usually not a good idea to travel right after surgery.  There are increased risks of developing a DVT for one.  Best to discuss with your surgeon.

Great question! Nothing wrong with being a private person!!If you are undergoing anesthesia you will need someone to take care of you during the first 24 hours at a minimum.  If the procedure you are having  requires pain medication then consider hiring a caretaker to assist you in recovery.  Your surgeon should be able to provide you more specific details on the recovery.

I understand your concern about privacy; everyday our patients tell us they a re concerned about this for both personal and professional reasons. However, you need to describe your plans with your surgeon and ask the office what they recommend for recovery and travel after surgery.
