I just went on a consult for fillers and remember the doctor saying something about how deep certain fillers are injected and that different fillers are injected at different depths under the skin. Specifically, is there a difference in depth of injection between Radiesse and Voluma? If so, why? And which depth works better/why for the temple and zygoma area? Thanks!
Answer: Radiesse vs. Voluma and planes of injection Hello and thank you for your question. Fillers used in the temples are usually injected deeper whether it is Radiesse or Voluma. In the cheeks, however, fillers can be injected into different planes depending on what is used. Radiesse is a calcium based filler that is white in color and more of a paste-like consistency. That being said, it is best when injected deep, right onto bone, in areas like the temples or zygoma. Voluma, on the other hand, is a hyaluronic acid based filler with a gel-like consistency and can be injected deep onto bone or sub-dermally. Both of these fillers are meant for volume replacement and are thicker in consistency which means superficial injections are not recommended. Both are great fillers for creating a natural look. Be sure you are seeking an experienced injector who specializes in facial aesthetics for best results and guidance. Good luck!

Answer: Temple and zygoma fillers I normally inject both fillers right above the bone to avoid blood vessels. Both fill above that plane because of displacement. Normally I gently place the needle over the bone. If I did a subdermal placement which I have done on occasion I use a 22 guage cannula to avoid the blood vessels. I would chose that technique to inject the temples for a patient with osteoporosis with very thin periorbital bones to avoid diffusion of lidocaine around the eye which could cause temporary double vision.

Answer: Best Filler for Temples Thank you for your good question. The depth of injections is based on a variety of factors, including the area to be treated and whether the filler is to smooth away wrinkles or restore volume to the area. When treating the temples, the formulation is usually administered a bit deeper since volume is the goal. In addition, you have two fillers that work in different ways. Voluma works by adding support to the dermal structure, while Radiesse stimulates collagen production. Your top priority should be to choose a board-certified dermatologist for your treatment that has extensive experience in dermal fillers. This professional will be able to use the precision necessary in terms of both placement and dosing amount to achieve the best possible result.

Answer: Depth of Fillers in the Temples While fillers injected into the temples tend to be injected more deeply than other areas of the face, the specific depth will depend on a variety of factors including how much correction is needed. These two products work in different ways and therefore might be administered differently to achieve the desired result. Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that provides support within the dermal structure to restore youthful volume. Radiesse is a filler containing calcium hydrospheres that serve as a type of scaffolding in the dermal structure to provide volume right away. At the same time, the formulation stimulates the body to produce more collagen, for additional support over time. If you are working with an experienced, board-certified dermatologist with expertise in dermal fillers, you can rest assured that your doctor will choose the appropriate filler at the appropriate depth to create an optimal outcome for you.

Answer: Deep injection Great question! Radiesse and Volume are thick products and should be injected in the deeper planes of the tissue. Placing them too shallow can create a palpable and lumpy appearance. Thicker products are generally placed in the deeper tissues, thinner products are generally placed in the more superficial tissues. So depending on your desired results will depend on what products are used. Best of luck and hope this information helps! - Dr. Roger Tsai @DrRogerTsai Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Getting the Right Filler Depth Thank you for your question. The depth of the filler will depend on a variety of factors, including the amount of filler needed and the preferred injector technique. Radiesse and Voluma are usually both administered deeper below the dermis and also right on the bone to create smooth, natural fullness. Sculptra, which works by stimulating collagen production, is usually injected in similar areas. Usually it is safest to inject right on the bone with a depot technique in the temple, to avoid blood vessels and complications. Occasionally, I will add a hyaluronic acid filler subdermally, using a cannula in this area if needed. If you are working with an experienced, board-certified dermatologist, rest assured your injections will be placed with the precision necessary to obtain an optimal outcome for you.
