Can Kybella make your double chin larger?

Kybella is a FDA approved drug developed from deoxycholic acid that can effectively destroy fat cells, when injected under the chin. This aesthetic breakthrough is designed to reduce and refine the appearance of a double chin. It may take 2-4 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart,
to achieve the best result. The most common side effects are temporary burning, redness, swelling & numbness that can occur post injection. Swelling will generally peak around 3 - 4 days and reduce within 10 - 14 days. This tends to be more prominent when there is a large amount of fat and if it is your first time being treated. It appears you are likely in the peak of your swelling.  The numbness and swelling usually resolves after 2-6 weeks. We recommend avoiding any medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or fish oil 10 days prior to treatment and after treatment if possible. This seems to help with skin tightening.

Most patients will have some swelling after Kybella injections that can last for one to two weeks. In some cases, swelling lasts longer. This is probably what is going on in your situation. I haven't seen any instances of anyone developing a larger chin after Kybella. If your swelling doesn't resolve after a few more days, you may be having an inflammatory reaction. Consulting your board-certified dermatologist will give you a better idea if your healing is on track or if are having a reaction. It takes about 6-8 weeks or more to see Kybella's slimming effects.

Thank you for your question. At only 2 weeks after a Kybella injection, there is still a massive amount of swelling and inflammation going on and it can feel quite odd and even seem like it is worse. It can often take 6-8 weeks for the swelling and numbness to fully resolve. The Kybella did not make your chin larger, it is just doing what it is supposed to do and this is completely normal and should have been discussed with you prior to injection. I have not see kybella cause the chin to ger larger only if scar tissue developed or there was an inflammatory reaction that caused thickening of the skin.  Please see an expert.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Most patients who use Kybella have some degree of swelling after the procedure.  You are well within the realm of post procedure swelling.  During this time period, it will appear larger than the expected.  With kybella, the key is to be patient post procedure.  Some patients will need multiple treatments, expect the same type of post procedure swelling if you have set multiple procedures.

Thank you for your question. Kybella™ would not make your double chin larger. It’s very common for Kybella™ injections to result in swelling before any results become noticeable. The swelling is also often worse after the first treatment than after subsequent treatments. While 2 weeks is a long time for swelling to persist, it’s not unusual either. I recommend waiting a couple more weeks before making too many judgments about your results. You will most likely need 2 to 6 treatments total to resolve your double chin.  

Rest assured that Kybella will not make your double chin larger.  It is very common for swelling after a Kybella treatment to last for several weeks, so I believe this is what you are experiencing.  The good news is that people usually have less swelling with each treatment they receive, so next time you should experience less of this.

No. It won't make it larger. My guess is that what you are experiencing is post op swelling. While it typically resolves in 2 weeks, some patients take longer to heal. You will also probably need another injection in order to achieve your final results. 

Thank you for your question.  It's impossible to make an exact diagnosis without assessing you in-person, or reviewing photos.  That said, swelling is a common side effect after Kybella, and is often worst after the first treatment.  While swelling typically resolves within 1-2 weeks, it can last longer in some patients - I have seen a few patients who had mild swelling for up to 6-8 weeks after treatment.  It's highly unlikely that the Kybella made the fat deposit under your chin larger - chances are you are experiencing some delayed swelling after your first treatment.  Please follow-up with your injector if you have any concerns.  Best of luck!
