Lifting kids after breast lift with implants?

Dear Rk79,I tell my patients not to lift anything more than 8lbs for at least two weeks. But every plastic surgeon has his own postoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MD

Thank you for your posting! Many of the moms in our office ask this same question. It is definitely important to know this information ahead of time so you can plan accordingly. After an augmentation-mastopexy procedure, it is best to avoid lifting anything over 5 lbs for at least six weeks. However, you should consult your board-certified plastic surgeon regarding his or her postoperative protocol and it can be unique to each surgeon. Good luck in your upcoming procedure!

Thank you for your questions. Every surgeon has his or her own protocol for recovery and limitations after surgery. After any breast procedure, I usually recommend patients avoid strenuous lifting or pushing/pulling for at least 6 weeks.Hope this helps!

I advise my patients that they can lift their children to transfer to high chair, car seat, or crib by the third day after surgery. They have had no problems with recovery or healing. You should check with your surgeon's protocol.Dr. Ted Eisenberg, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and Author 

While each board-certified plastic surgeon has their own post-op recovery recommendations, during my 30+ years of experience, I tell my patients that on average they will recover 6 weeks after their breast surgeries. During this 6-week healing process, any strenuous impact on the chest muscles should be avoided. Any form of lifting or impact created on the chest muscles should be gradually reintroduced. Be sure to discuss your post-op recovery with your board-certified surgeon for a personalized recommendation.

In most cases, surgeons will advise avoiding heavy lifting for 3 to 6 weeks following a breast lift and breast augmentation.  Check with your surgeon for their advice regarding lifting children, in your particular case.  Best wishes, Dr. Lepore.

In my practice where nearly all of my breast augmentations are placed in a partial subpectoral position, I take a very aggressive approach by having my patients avoid forceful lifting for the first six weeks after their procedure.  This is based on three decades plus of experience in which I rarely have seen patients develop bleeding that risks stimulating capsule contracture.  In my opinion this risk exists during the first six weeks of the healing process.  Though rare, I recommend that my patients limit their upper body lifting to a pillow or towel for the first two weeks and to no more than 2 to 5 pounds through weeks three through six.  After that a return to regular activities such as lifting a baby should be okay.  I know that a more conservative than most but wish to avoid problems for my patients  in any way that I can.   Please enjoy the video below regarding recovery after breast augmentation.  Best wishes,Jon A Perlman M.D., FACSDiplomate, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)ABC-TV Extreme Makeover SurgeonBeverly Hills, CaliforniaIG: jonperlmanmd
