Doctor recommended 6 vials of Kybella for my first treatment, is this normal? (Photos)

Thank you for your question. I find that VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF are best for contouring the chin in those who are candidates, but Kybella can be used as an alternative and gets better results when combined with thermage/ultherapy/exilis or coolsculpting. Kybella alone is good for dissolving the submental fat under the chin area while contouring the jawline and making the chin more defined. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with an expert.    Best, Dr. Emer

Dear miissbecca,Kybella typically takes 3 to 5 treatments to work. This is why I've stopped carrying Kybella in my office.  I recommend neck liposuction more often then any injectable procedure for the neck now. It provides superior results gives me more control over the area than any injectable.  It also costs about the same as what you paid for your first kybella session. The liposuction can be done under local while awake in the office and recovery is about the same as kybella.Daniel Barrett, MD

Thank you for your question. From looking at your photos using Kybella can help with reducing the fat. Most patients start with 2 vials per treatment. There isn't a set amount of treatments you will need. You would have to go back to your office 8 weeks later to see if another 2 vials are needed. And so on. Until you reach the results you desire. Another option is Lipo withThermiTight. Lipo would help with removing fat from underneath the chin and jawline. In combination ThermiTight is a radio frequency that applies heat to the area helping the tissues shrink and firming of the skin, giving you a more define jawline along with tightening of the neck. If you would like an one and done procedure doing the Lipo and ThermiTight would be the best option for you. Look for a specialist in your area to evaluate you to help determine the best treatment. The downside of kybella is the pain, downtime and the fact that it does not tighten the skin where the fat is dissolved. In your situation, it looks like you could benefit from both fat removal (not alot) and skin tightening. That is ALOT of kybella for no skin tightening benefit when that is half of the problem to solve. I
I would look into Trusculpt 3D for the neck and under chin. Not only does it reduce fat permanently, but it tightens the skin and it is non invasive with no downtime. You also may get a moderate effect from another non invasive treatment called thermismooth 250, although not as much of a fat reduction benefit. 
I would definitely seek out alternatives to the kybella though, if not just for the cost of all those vials she is recommending. Trusculpt 3D will cost about $1500 and Thermismooth 250 will cost about $2000.

Thanks for your question and posting pictures.  We have discontinued Kybella in our practice for melting submental fat.  The FDA recently approved the SculpSure laser for treating submental fat (double chins).  It is a quick 25 minute, completely non-invasive treatment.  In the FDA study, the participants had 100% satisfaction after 1 or 2 treatments.  If you look at the Kybella FDA studies, there is high satisfaction after an average of 6 treatments.  I did SculpSure recently and it was only mildly uncomfortable.  I had no noticeable swelling.  With Kybella, you will have noticeable swelling for 1-4 weeks.  Best of luck.

Kybella would we an excellent option. Typically the guidelines call for 2 vials per treatment. 6 vials seems a bit much but at the end of the day different doctors use differently. With Kybella you have to be ready for 2 to 4 sessions with each session requiring up to 2 vials. In addition the chin is a little bit recessed to fillers to the chin can also enhance the profile

Hi miissbecca,Kybella would only work on submental fat and you are young so skin laxity would not be much. However, six vials may be uncomfortable if injected in one sitting. Usually 1-3 vials are enough in a single appointment. You can always have more 6-8 weeks after.All the best,Justin Harper, M.D.
