Fibrosis after liposuction! Help! (Photo)

Question

I had liposuction done 3 and a half weeks ago, i have bumps and lumps all over my stomach. I'm so sad, I'm 25 and just the thought of having to hide my stomach all the time makes me cry. My body and confidence was ruined !!!! Please help! What options do I have, I'm massaging twice daily and started with ultrasound combined with my lymphatic massage last week, the sessions will be once/ week as adviced. Will this go away ? What else can I do :(

It is very common to have bruising and swelling for weeks to months after liposuction procedures.  What is most important is that you follow your surgeons post operative instructions and continue compression.  If you are concerned, lymphatic massage and Velashape or Venus Legacy treatments can be used to improve the swelling and help the skin tighten.  My patients start treatments right away and it improves the long term results.  Speak to your physician if you are concerned. It seems that you had an energy based device and likely have some fibrosis and a lot of swelling that needs time to heal. Thanks for the question, it seems you have a hypertrophic response to the procedure. Just like some people get bad scars on the skin you can get get more scarring under the skin. Thank you for the post and photographs. It is very common to have bruising and swelling for weeks to months after liposuction procedures. You should follow your surgeons instructions including compression and massage. Most of the time, lumps disappear with time, compression and massage. In rare cases, lumps do not disappear and may require a second minor liposuction procedure (but this is very uncommon). Please share your concerns with your surgeon and I am sure they will be able to assess you and devise the best possible plan moving forward. I hope this helps.

After three weeks there is a sizable amount of swelling after liposuction. This will be more substantial if liposuction was aided by ultrasound or laser. There is no benefit to massage nor ultrasonic treatment. Ultrasonic treatment may actually aggravate the problem.

Luckily its still early in your healing.  I like to use foam with compression to achieve a smooth contour.  Contour abnormalities can be common with lipo.  Sometimes revision lipo with fat grafting is necessary. Allow 6 months of healing, and keep in touch with your surgeon.All the Best,Dr. Brian Reagan

Thank you for your question. At 3 weeks post op you still have residual swelling from the procedure. I tell my patients that they will not get an idea of what the final results will look like until about 3 months post op. Lymphatic massage and ultrasound treatment have not been scientifically proven to help.  Have you discussed your concerns with your Plastic Surgeon? I would make an appointment to discuss in person to help alleviate any of your concerns.

3 1/2 weeks is too soon to make final judgments in regards to the outcome after liposuction.  it is not uncommon for patients to have some regularities and firmness at this point. I personally do not believe any form of massage will have any impact on the final outcome after liposuction.  Other surgeons may disagree. The way I see it the fat has either been removed correctly or not and physical manipulation cannot change that at this point.  At this point you need to wait 3 to 6 months  until your results have finalized.At that point you need to reassess to see if you're a candidate for any form of revision surgery.  uneven liposuction can often be improved through revision liposuction.If the first procedure was done in an aggressive manner with Arias over liposuctioned  then correction becomes much more difficult.  follow up with your plastic surgeon and have him or her address your concerns.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
