How important is getting dental infections ruled out before getting breast implants?

It is important not to have any infection, from any site, before having a breast augmentation.  If you are not having dental symptoms and routinely see a dentist for checkups, you don't need "clearance" from the dentist before surgery.  However, if you are having dental problems, then yes, you need to be seen by a dentist and treated.  If you do have a dental infection, it is best to wait for several weeks before proceeding with breast augmentation.

It is important to rule out infection prior to having any implants.  As long as you are symptom free and have ad regular dental visits you most likely do not have an active infection.  Your dentist will be able to advise you after examination, and if infection is suspected you will likely receive antibiotics to treat it.

Hi Diane- Yes, it is always important to rule out any dental infections, or infections of any type.  You should consult with your Dentist and they will most likely put you on antibiotics, should there be an infection present.  It is important to always let you Surgeon know of any medications you are on or infections that arise.  The questionnaires we have our patients fill out cover A LOT of information but having good communication with your Board Certified Surgeon will ensure that you will be ready and healthy for surgery!  Best of luck with your procedure!

I think that if you are not having symptoms of any dental problems, you shouldn't have to worry about getting a breast augmentation.  It would not hurt to brush and floss aggressively and use a fluoride mouth rinse in the weeks before your surgery if you are concerned.  Of course, there is nothing wrong with seeing your dentist ahead of time to get checked, but most Plastic Surgeons don't routinely recommend that patients get "dental clearance" before surgery. 

It is important to make sure you do not have any active infections at the time of surgery as some of that bacteria can seed the implant and cause a low grade infection. If you did have a dental abscess or other active infection in the mouth you would probably know about it. It is not routine practice to have patients rule out dental infections prior to surgery. It is important to be infectious free before implants are placed, this includes a sinus infection, urinary track infection or tooth infection etc. During your consult the surgeon should ask you about active medical issues and that's your opportunity to tell them about your teeth or anything else which is not quite right.
