I got a blood clot 3 days after liposuction. My doctor didn't have me stop taking my hormones pills before surgery.

Question

He just had me stop taking my ibuprofen 2 weeks prior to surgery . Is the hormones pills what cause my blood clot? I'm My very healthy had prior surgeries and never had any medical issues.

I require our patients under general anesthesta to stop taking oral contraceptives with estrogen 7 days prior to surgery. These clots can lead to fatal pulmonary embolus.

The risks for deep vein thrombosis during liposuction should be very very small. Most patients are moved around during the case. I don't see any reason to stop birth control pills prior to liposuction unless there is some other thrombotic issue.

Hormones contraceptive s can cause Blood clotes  is better stop it before any surgerybut i do not think is a direct cause you have it  there are others risk factors even if you are a young healty personeven genetic factors in Blood coagulation.Check An Internist to Check all your risk factors   maybe is a good opportunity to discover or stop an other disease.

There are multiple risk factors for developing blood clots.Liposuction is considered a very low-risk procedure.This is especially true when general anesthesia is avoided.I do not believe the standard of care is to take women off birth control pills for this type of procedure.My practice is focused almost exclusively on body contouring using liposuction and fat transfer.I have performed over 2,000 of these procedures in the last five years.To date, I have not taken anyone off birth control pills for surgery.A surgeon decides on how to manage patients, including taking risk factors into account.While birth control pills do increase the risk for developing blood clots, the increased risk factor is quite small.It is considered standard of care to ask patients to avoid ibuprofen prior to surgery.You may want to consider telling your primary care physician about your blood clot and certainly tell any surgeons in the future should you choose to have any more surgical procedures.Best of luck, Mats Hagstrom, M.D.

Blood clots after liposuction are very uncommon. Hormone treatments can be one contributing factor, but there are a host of other things that can make you more prone to blood clots. You need answers. I would definitely encourage you to see a hematologist for a complete work up as you may have a genetic factor that you need to know about like Leiden 5. If you are young and on birth control pills you may want to switch to another form of birth control. Don't look to blame; look for information to protect yourself with in the future.
