Dysport injected to upper lip, now teeth no longer show when I smile, should I never do it in this location? (Photos)

Question

In an effort to prevent the lip lines and from me puckering, the doctor injected along my upper lip. In doing so, my teeth no longer show when I smile. Three month is a long wait. How I wish he mention the trade off would be not to show off my smile, ugh! and I just had a lip lift in May.

I am sorry you feel this potential side effect was not mentioned to you before the injection. Usually, the amount of Dysport used in the lips is small and my one hope for you is this effect will not last the full 3 months. Please give your injector/physician some feedback about this complication.Best wishes. Hi, I wonder if your doctor was trying to treat a "gummy smile" and decrease the exposure of your gums when you smile. If so, you have a favorable outcome. Also, it may have softened some of the fine lines around your mouth but it comes with the risk of dropping the upper lip some.

I'm sorry you have had issues from your Dysport treatment.  Unfortunately this is a risk from treating this area as the muscles around the mouth are weakened.  Results from Dysport are temporary and you should gradually return to your previous look over the next few months.  Other options to address wrinkles around the mouth include chemical peels and lasers.

Hang in there.  Fortunately, Dysport or Botox injected in the upper lip does not typically last 3-4 months because of the constant movement.  I suggest the next time you get Dysport you can request a smaller amount.  Also consider Restylane Silk for the perioral vertical wrinkles.  Hope this helps.

To treat the fine lines around the lips, you want to weaken the fibers of the circular orbicularis muscle that are at the lip border.  To do so requires only a few units of botox or dysport.  It sounds as if you received either a larger dose or you were injected higher up on the lip so that the muscles responsible for upper lip elevation have been weakened.  Fortunately, the result will be self limited, and your smile will gradually return.  If there is a next time, make certain that fewer units are injected and they are placed right at the lip border.  Find a certified, expert injector to make certain that your goals are achieved.

Wrinkles relaxers like Botox and Dysport are commonly used to soften perioral lines or lip lines. In my experience, the key to good results is using a low dose technique. The low dose soften the lines without completely relaxing the orbiculares oris muscle. It would be helpful to know how much Dysport was used in your case. I usually use 6 units of Dysport for the upper lip spread out over 4 injection points (1.5 units each).
