Can Dysport be used instead of Botox for platysmal bands?

Question

I go to a top Orange County, CA dermatologist. Botox has stopped working around my eyes. We switched to Dysport and it works fine. I recently tried botox in my platysmal bands (I was a perfect candidate) but it has done nothing.... been 2.5 weeks. 16 units for each band. 2 running up center of neck. I know botox resistance is rare but could this explain the zero reaction? and can I try Dysport in the bands as well?

Yes, Dysport and Botox and Xeomin may be used relatively interchangeably for the relaxation of platysmal neck bands. You will notice a quicker action of onset and a smoother result with Dysport.

You can use either Botox or Dysport for treatment of platysmal bands. They are essentially the same with the exception of minor differences. True Botox or Dysport resistance is very rare. If your platysmal bands are present at rest (secondary to muscle separation and not overactivity) then neither Botox or Dysport will work. Make sure you are under the care of an experienced injector. I like to use both dysport and Botox for my patients. Some patients are better suited for Botox then dysport.  And likewise, some  patients are better suited for Dysport then Botox .  Each drug has its own characteristics and therefore you need to find a physician who is comfortable using both. Platysma banding can be corrected with both Botox and Dysport  . If after two weeks you do not have the effect you might need more Botox.

Clinically, Xeomin, Dysport, and Botox are all equally effective despite the whisper campaigns that these companies run against each other.  The cost of Botox from Allergan is out of control and Dysport is a relative bargain so plan on seeing more and more injectors using Dysport rather than Botox.  The only major difference in these products is that the dosing of Dysport is different than Botox or Xeomin.  Roughly, multiply the dose of botox you have had by 3 and that is approximately how many units of Xeomin you need.  Depending on your neck bands, you might need 90 units of Xeomin for the neck cords.  If this is not effective, consider having an isolate platysmaplasty.  This is very sneaky neck surgery done through a small incision under the chin.  Compared with a facelift, recovery is quick.

Yes both Dysport and Botox can be used to treat platysmal bands.  If you are not seeing results after two weeks return to your injector for an evaluation.  You may require a touch up.  I've included a video I hope you find helpful.

Hello, and thanks for your question. Dysport® and BOTOX® are very similar, and many people choose to try the other option if one doesn’t seem to be giving them the results they’re looking for. Let your cosmetic surgeon know that you’re interested in trying Dysport rather than BOTOX. As long as he or she uses both of these products, you shouldn’t have a problem switching. Hop this helps!

Platysmals are injectd directly into the band. The dosing sounds correct. The placement may not be. You can try Dysport, It is derived from the same protein as Botox.
