Botox/Restylane/Radiesse while on Humira?

Question

I have received Botox, Restylane, and Radiesse in the past with no issues following the injection and I am scheduled to receive them again in a few weeks. I have, however, also recently started taking Humira for Crohn's and the idea is that I take it every two weeks. Would it still be safe for me to receive Botox, Restylane, and Radiesse in my face?

I am sorry to hear that your Crohn's disease has been having flare ups.  I am certain that you are interested in having the injections as they will definitely give you a boost to a difficult physical condition.  I have had similar situations with patients who have been on Humira and other agents that can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infection.  We use meticulous technique to reduce the potential for injection site infections.  Radiesse, Restylane, and Botox have no specific contraindications for injection in patients on this class of medications.

There is no contraindication for Botox or injectable fillers while being treated with Humira. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the injector knows about your Humira treatments in order to be even more meticulous in your case about sterile technique injections (this should be true for all injections).Hope this helps,Dr. Gus Diaz

Thanks for your thoughtful question.  I have safely and successfully injected patients on different injectable biologic agents including Humira, Enbrel and Stelara.  As with any procedure, care must be taken to maintain sterile technique to address the increased risk of infection in these patients.  My experience has shown no difference in safety or efficacy of these treatments in those patients whom I have treated. Best of luck to you!

It's not a contraindication to do cosmetic injectables while on a medication such as Humira.  However, I would be aware that there is a higher risk for infection while on this class of drug.  It would be prudent to use extra precautions in terms of disinfecting the skin prior to injection and to maintain strict sterile technique while injecting Botox or especially fillers.  I would also avoid any permanent filler such as Bellafill and would probably not choose Radiesse or Sculptra since these products cannot be dissolved.  I would only consider use of a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm or Restylane.You should definitely discuss your entire medical history and medications with your doctor prior to doing any cosmetic injections.  Make sure you go to a core cosmetic doctor such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.   I would also recommend that you get clearance from your GI doctor prior to proceeding.

Humira (and those medications in its class) are not a contraindication to most dermal fillers or Botox. The exception may be Sculptra, which relies on an inflammatory process to "fill" and that process will be somewhat defeated by the Humira.Best wishes!  Harry V. Wright MD, Sarasota, Florida

Hello and thank you for your question. I hope that you are able to help control you disease with Humira.  While on the medication you will be at greater risk for infection.  I would recommend that you use a hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane or Restylane Lift.  I would not use products such as Radiesse, Sculptra, or Bellafill.  The use of Botox should not cause a problem.  However, it is important that your skin be prepped with a disinfectant and that sterile technique be used because you are at a greater risk for infection.
