It sounds like you were having some anxiety about a potential cosmetic surgery procedure. In specific the BBL procedure. In my opinion, being a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes exclusively in liposuction and fat transfer I would say your fears are more than justified and highly appropriate. In reality, the number of plastic surgeons who deliver consistent quality results for both Liposuction and fat transfer is in a small minority. The truth is a substantial number of plastic surgeons are not good at Liposuction, and never will be. Too many providers think of Liposuction as a simplistic procedure with a low learning curve and with that attitude, they will never mastered the procedure. The impact of poorly done Liposuction is massive and horrendous. People are left permanently disfigured on a regular basis by board-certified plastic surgeons, who have years of experience and should know better than to do operations that they don’t know how to do well. The number of plastic surgeons who have mastered this procedure is an a small select minority, and you need to find one of those providers. If you do, and the chance of having any of the problems you described is very very small. If you don’t go through a selection process and properly vet providers before scheduling surgery, then you take a significant chance of being disfigured. In the end, there are only two variables that determine the quality result when it comes to this procedure. The first is patient candidacy, and the second is the skill and experience of the provider. Both patient candidacy, and the scale of the surgeon are probably equally as important. You didn’t include pictures so we can’t begin to discuss your candidacy for the procedure. Understanding your own candidacy for both Liposuction and fat transfer is absolutely paramount and understanding what is potentially possible. Some people simply are not good candidates in a matter. Who does the procedure they’re not going to have a good outcome. You need to have a clear understanding if you’re a good candidate for both Liposuction and fat transfer. In reality out of 10 patients, I consult with one will be an excellent candidate three will be good candidates, three patients will be average candidates and three patients will be poor candidates. That should not have the procedure. Of those 10 patients only one that has the potential for an exceptional outcome. That is the patient who was the exceptional candidate. Patients who are average candidates can best have average results. Nobody can give a port candidate for a procedure an excellent results. Understanding your own candidacy for the procedure is a big part of setting correct expectations. Many patients post on this website, asking if they’re a candidate as if this is a yes or no answer. Candidacy is always a spectrum that goes from non-candidacy to perfect candidate. The second half of the equation is finding the right provider. The best way to do this is to have multiple in person consultations. Personally, I would recommend people avoid virtual consultations whenever possible. I don’t think you can make an accurate assessment of a patient nor can a patient properly vet, plastic surgeons without meeting in person. Virtual consultations can be an introduction and a way of meeting more plastic surgeons, but should be followed up with an in person consultation if you are considering having surgery with them. Personally, I would never consider having cosmetic surgery without meeting my surgeon in person, and having the chance to properly vet that provide. During each in person consultation, ask you to provide her to open up your portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of previous patient who had similar body characteristics to your own. And experience provider should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing the best results of a providers career or a patient whose candidacy for the procedure was radically different than your own is completely insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like in the hands of each provider or what your results may look like. There should be no question in your mind of what your results would look like because after a proper consultation with the right provider, you will have seen so many before and after pictures of patients who look just like you that you will know exactly what the results will look like. Become familiar with what quality before and after pictures look like for this procedure. Recognize that fat transfer results can look very impressive early after the procedure but early results are very very different than final results. After pictures should never be taken less than 3 to 6 months after the procedure. Do not assume anyone is showing you final mature, long-term outcomes, when reviewing before and after pictures. Instead, you’ll have to ask if provider exactly what the timeframe is of when after pictures were taken. In regards to Liposuction Resort, look very carefully at all areas treated to make sure there are no skin contour, irregularities in any area treated. Ask the provider to go over exactly what areas for treated with Liposuction and what areas were not treated next look very carefully at transition zones between treated an untreated areas. Personally, I view the torso as a single anatomic unit and prefer to treat the entire torso doing Liposuction. By treating the entire torso as a single anatomic unit patients are left without transition zones between treated and untreated areas. This leaves patient with a natural even thin, fat distribution that’s consistent throughout their entire Torso. A full torso includes upper abdomen, lower, abdomen, love handles, waste, fullback, and under arms all the way to the side of the breast. I recommend all patients get a proper set of pictures of their body at the beginning of this process. It serves multiple purposes and it’s definitely useful if you are communicating with providers electronically. Take a look at how plastic surgeons take before and after pictures to get an idea. Pictures should be taken using another person holding the camera or use the timer on your camera. Take pictures from about 8 feet away, wearing revealing undergarments, showing your front, side, and back side standing in a neutral position. Crop the pictures to include your body from your neck to just below your knees. Consider re-posting on this website, including pictures to get other providers assessments regarding your candidacy for both Liposuction and gluteal fat transfer. Different plastic surgeons have very different versions of how this procedure should be performed or what constitutes an attractive, female figure. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of putting sufficient effort into provider selection. When, in doubt, slow down a schedule more consultations. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
