Rhinoplasty with high blood pressure. Is it safe?

I'm thirty years old and having rhinoplasty in a few weeks. My blood pressure likes to camp out at 140/90. I also have high cholesterol. Other than these issues, I'm healthy and active. Is this surgery typically safe for patients with higher blood pressure?

JG: While 140/90 is borderline high, it should be very safe for you to undergo rhinoplasty, which is a relatively safe surgery with minimal blood loss.  Just make sure to not exercise for a couple weeks after surgery in order to prevent getting your heart rate or blood pressure any higher than baseline.  Best of luck!

Any high blood pressure should ideally be controlled before surgery, particularly if it's elective surgery (like rhinoplasty).  Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Having borderline high blood pressure does not prohibit one from having rhinoplasty surgery. Your blood pressure will be controlled during surgery and there are numerous medications after surgery to control it should it be necessary.

Most likely this should be fine and you would do fine with surgery. In our practice anyone with high blood pressure before a surgery is further evaluated to ensure there are no further issues and may even warrant a medical workup by their primary care doctor.

Having a blood pressure in this range is hard on your heart and blood vessels and increases the risk of cardiovascular issues and stroke. This should be treated with medication by your primary care doctor.Getting a rhinoplasty with high blood pressure is going to mean an increased risk of post-operative bleeding and an increase in bruising and swelling after the surgery. Blood pressure can be controlled during the surgery.An EKG and a work up for your blood pressure issue would be required prior to undertaking any kind of surgery.
