I am 57, 175 pounds and 5 days PO after receiving 650/700 cc round, smooth silicone implants. This was a bi-lateral replacement breast re-augmentation from saline to silicone. My husband and I have always had a very active sex life and he is anxious to resume again. Can you please tell me when the appropriate time is that you can have sex after BA? How much pressure can he use before I should worry about rupture? And, if we do have sex too early, what is the effect on the implants?

Answer: Sex after surgery Surgeons all have different recommendations regarding activities after surgery, and it is important that you understand and follow what your surgeon has told you specifically. In general I recommend breast augmentation patients wait 4 weeks before they restart cardio exercises, and patients with textured implants should avoid high impact for 8 weeks. Because the heart is so close to the surgical site, straining and an elevated heart rate are especially concerning after breast surgery. I have seen more hematomas occur the third week after surgery than I have in the first 24 hours (which really should be the riskiest window), and I think this is due to increased activity before your body has healed enough to tolerate the pressure. For sex I advise people to first wait until they feel comfortable (not when their partner is ready), and I will support what time frame the patient prefers (pretending it is my rule if the time seems excessive to the partner). I would guess most patients are pretty uncomfortable for at least the first 2 weeks. I also recommend that it is best for the patient not to support their body weight with their arms, and being on their back without weight or pressure on their chest is a good starting place. Also they need to be very clear if they do not want their breasts touched yet. If sex for you qualifies as a form of cardio, good for you, but it might mean that waiting longer is better.Best of luck!
