Will a gynecomastia surgery be rescheduled if I have a mild cold?

Question

My gynecomastia surgery date is set for January 14th. As this is right in the middle of cold and flu season, I've been wondering: would they cancel surgery if I came down with a mild cold before it? As in, runny nose, some coughing, etc. I usually do not get fevers or severe symptoms when I do catch colds.

You will have to discuss with your surgeon.  In my practice, we would probably proceed with most non-implant elective surgeries in the face of a mild upper respiratory illness such as a mild "cold" as long as the patient is not having a fever and not experiencing increased cough or chest secretions.

Thank you for your question.  In general if you come down with an illness, it is best to avoid any elective surgery until it has cleared.  The reason is not so much the risk of the surgery, but ensuring that from a breathing point of view there is no increased risk to putting you to sleep.

Generally speaking, patients undergoing elective surgery should be at their optimal (or close to) level of health prior to proceeding. It is especially important that there be no compromise of pulmonary function or active source of infection present.Your plastic surgeon will be the only relevant resource when it comes to determining your ability to proceed at the time of surgery.Best wishes.

Gynecomastia surgery, as any elective surgery, should be delayed if you have breathing compromise as it is not worth the extra risk of being intubated. Please check with your anesthesiologist.

Obviously that's a question between you and your doctor and will have to do with the degree of illness you might have and the type of anesthesia. If it's being done under local with sedation you probably have a little bit more flexibility then if it's being done under general anesthesia. Let's think
