Ive had acne for 7 years im now 18. I have extremely oily skin and I do wear makeup. my acne will still be just as bad when I do not apply makeup for months at a time. I've tried every medication the doctor could prescribe me and tried tons of skin care products. Nothing has worked and my acne has made me extremely self conscious and depressed. Would it be worth it to get into a dermatologist for accutane?
Answer: Accutane can be a good option, recommend speaking to your provider to determine what dosage is best for you Accutane is a go-to medication for patients with recalcitrant cystic acne. It can reduce pore size and also reduce sebum production in your skin, making it less oily; and in turn, dryer. Accutane can be used to control acne, but patients receiving the medication should be carefully monitored. In terms of skincare, always wear an appropriate sunscreen and reduce direct sun exposure. In my patients, I recommend a good ceramide moisturizer such as Elevase whenever they are on Accutane. This will keep the skin hydrated and reduce the oiliness of the skin that is associated with oil-based moisturizers. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Realself100 Surgeon

Answer: Accutane Treatment There are many options to treat acne such as topicals, antibiotics, hormonal therapy, and of course, Accutane (or Isotretinoin). When other treatment options fail to clear the skin, Isotretinoin may be an option. In fact, up to 85% of patients who complete a full course of Istretinoin see permanent clearance of their skin from acne. A bit about Isotretinoin - It's is an oral medication that is derived from high-strength Vitamin A which works by shrinking/inducing cell death of the sebaceous glands, which make oil in your skin. It also has an antimicrobial effect. The medication has helped many of my patients and in many cases, transformed their lives. Here's the bad - It's a serious medication with many potential side effects and requires a long term commitment since a full course can be as long as six to ten months. I would recommend you to see a dermatologist because with appropriate guidance and close monitoring, it can be very helpful for the right candidate. All in all, Isotretinoin is proven effective treatment for severe acne, but is one that should be saved after trying other treatment options given the serious potential side effects and long commitment required. Good luck!
