Hello and thanks for this question. A dermal filler in the lips will help with a gummy smile and is very safe. The dermal filler will add just a bit more volume and hides the gums nicely. Another technique is to use 1 or 2 units of Botox to relax the muscles which pull the lip up. This can change your smile more and so it needs to be done very carefully. I have experience with both techniques if you would like to discuss these options feel free to make an appointment.

For many years now Botox has been used to treat so-called "gummy smiles". Injected in the proper places to the sides of the nose it can soften the upward muscular activity of that region sufficiently to diminish the excessive exposure of the upper gums with smiling that characterizes this problem. A small amount of filler, such as Juvederm Ultra Plus XC placed into the upper lips can further help to diminish the gummy appearance, but special care must be taken to avoid overfilling. Great question.  You really do have two options here - the first being minimally invasive with injections, and the second being a more permanent solution with surgery.  As far as injections are concerned, you have to balance "natural smile" with the amount of volume placed.  Adding a little bit of botox can help to relax the muscles that pull up your lips when you smile.  This is all temporary, and something that you can use to test the waters and see how you like it. Other patients want a more definitive result.  Mucosal lip advancements work VERY well in this case and can give you a natural contour.  The biggest issue with it is prolonged swelling that can take time to settle down, as well as patients wanting even more volume afterwards! That being said, it works exceedingly well in decreasing gummy smile and providing volume at the same time.  I hope some of this helps.  Best of luck.

Botox can injected above the upper lip to help diminish the gummy smile. Botox lasts approximately 3-4 months. Dermal fillers can be injected into the lips to give you a fuller lips and to help to not show the gums.
