Will top superficial stitches, marks heal on their own or could they scar? 1 month post-op.

Question

Bottom stitches are absorbable sutures. I had a scar revision on nose bridge 4 weeks age. 3 week age I had the top superficial stitches remove and now I have marks (holes) where stitches where. Will this heal?

Our treatments use combination therapy to improve the epidermis and dermis for most deep scars. The options available for acne scars depend on the character of your scars, in terms of topography and contour. We see atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars, as well as scars that have hypo and hyperpigmentation. We begin each scar evaluation with an assessment of scar quality and subtype. Our main concern is rebuilding collagen and that is why we use a HIDEF protocol that includes combination therapy. Morpheus 8, scar subcision, fibrous release, fractional laser, CO2 laser, Thulium laser, PDL Vbeam laser, and fractional resurfacing can be used in addition to TCA Cross and chemical peels to further improve skin. Patients should start Melarase AM and Melarase PM for active hyperpigmentation. Always begin with a consultation to decide whether early subcision should be started.

Thanks for your question and I understand your concern. Post-operative scarring is one of the biggest concerns patients have when they undergo any type of nose surgery, since incisions are often placed in a prominent location on the face. The good news is plastic surgeons experienced in nose reshaping procedures are well-trained in techniques that minimize visible scarring after surgery. While marks from stitches are not particularly common, they can occur, and it can take months for the residual markings to heal completely. However, if you are concerned about your current evidence of your stitches, it is best to check with your surgeon to see if you can be taking any steps to assist with healing and minimize long-term scarring at your incision site.

Generally wounds closed with non-absorbable sutures that are removed within 7 days do not lead to significant remnant "holes" or "train-track" patterns. However, depending on the type of suture used, the sensitivity of your skin, and whether there has been any level of infection or inflammation can negatively impact the healing. If you have any concerns it is always best to return to your surgeon where you can be examined and ensure that there is proper wound healing. In some cases you may need to be placed on an oral or topical antibiotic if infections, silicone sheeting or steroid injection if evidence of hypertrophic scar formation, or even possible dermabrasion to ensure an optimal result.
