I visually don’t like the shape of my nose—it was cute when I was growing up, but slowly began to grow longer and droop. I’ve also had trouble breathing for years—I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 3 and despite being on allergy medicine year round, I always have post nasal drip and a stuffy nose. I’d really like to improve the structure and function of my nose—I’m hoping a rhinoplasty would help. I’ve never seen an ENT. Also wondering what else would balance my face. Thanks!

Answer: Would I be able to fix my wide and droopy nose with a rhinoplasty? A rhinoplasty procedure can accomplish shaving down the dorsal hump, narrowing the wide nose, and decreasing the overall projection of it for cosmetic purposes. Expect the patient for that component yourself. There are many issues on the inside of the nose that can cause breathing difficulties such as allergies, chronic sinusitis, a deviated septum, and turbinate hypertrophy. Each one of these issues are treated differently with medications and/or surgery. If you have tried and failed medical therapy, then consider a septoplasty if there is significant deviated septum present internally blocking airflow. A thorough internal examination of the nose by an double board-certified ENT/facial plastic surgeon can make that determination. Functional nasal surgery can be billed in the patient's medical insurance once medical necessity has been documented and preauthorization has occurred with your medical insurance company. Both cosmetic nasal surgery and functional nasal surgery can be performed together under one anesthesia with one recovery period.

Answer: Fix Wide Droopy Nose and Breathing Dear Krosemc, You can address both the function and the aesthetic of the nose at the same time. I address breathing issues during every rhinoplasty to ensure that once the shape and size of the patients nose is changed that they will have not only an aesthetically pleasing nose but also a functional nose. Seek some consultations with experts and have imaging performed to show you the possibilities that rhinoplasty will provide for you. Review the surgeons before and after photographs to ensure expertise and natural looking results. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
