Advice please. I have a small thread sticking out of incision...

Question

I'm 6 weeks post op from a breast lift and have a "pinching" sensation in the scar in the breast fold. Today I noticed there is a clear thread similar to a fishing line sticking out of the little hole. Could this be stitches inside that need to be trimmed? I don't think the skin is going to heal over this sharp little thread. Tried to take pictures but the lighting was awful and because the "thread" is clear it didn't show up.

This is a fairly common problem and usually stops by about three months. It is probably and absorbable suture. It probably wouldn't hurt to pull on it with forceps, and if it doesn't easily come out, you should get in contact with your plastic surgeon who could easily remove it.

I agree with the others that if the thread sticking out of the incision is causing healing problems you should contact your surgeon to ensure that the suture is sewn properly for safe healing. If the thread sticking out is uncomfortable and causing problems then see your PS as soon as possible to make sure there is no infection or other problem.

Thank you for your question.  Yes, this looks like a suture that hasn't dissolved and is still in place.  These can be annoying and irritating.  If you make an appointment with your surgeon, they can remove it, and allow it to heal over.  All the best,

Thank you for your question and I am sorry to hear about your surgical recovery issues.  It sounds as if one of the sutures used to close your incisions has worked its way out of your skin.  You are correct that in these cases the body will be unable to fully heal until the suture is removed.  Make an appointment to see your surgeon, they can remove the offending stitch, taking care of the problem.  Hope this helps.

Hi, there.Some times sutures can move their way out.  Depending on the suture, it can be trimmed at the skin or it needs to be removed.  Please visit your plastic surgeon to be evaluated.

This is a fairly common problem and is easily resolved with a visit to your surgeon.  A piece of the suture that was supposed to be absorbed has worked it's way to the surface.  Your surgeon can easily remove it and problem will be resolved.Good luck!

It is common to have suture exposed, or eventually suture that can work to the surface. The suture will eventually dissolve and the piece that is sticking out of the incision will eventually break off. Some PS allow the patient to trim the suture, but it is best that you speak with your PS office for specific instructions.
