Surgery 9/22/15, 2 wks in started spitting stitches. 9 wks in PS said I was rejecting the deeper layer of stitches and did surgery to remove them and restitched with thread. 2 days later had dressing changed and had a severe allergic reaction to the tape. 3rd day started developing painful blisters and unbearable itch. PS did culture which came back with MRSA. Been on Doxcycline for 4 days now (allergic to sulfa) and no change or relief. Should I see a dermatologist or infectious disease doc?
Answer: Skin irritation Thank you for your question and pic. Everyone has bacteria on their skin and once cultured some may come back as MRSA. You don't appear to be having an infection but more likely an allergic reaction to the product that was used on your skin. You may consider discussing it with your surgeon and a dermatologist so appropriate skin care products are used to resolve this. Sometimes coconut oil or baby oil can help as well. Best of luck.

Answer: MRSA I would definitely suggest that you get your surgeon's opinion. If you have a dermatologist, call him or her and see if they have experience with MRSA and can recommend a new course of treatment. If not, see an expert. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Answer: Infectious disease doctor Sorry to hear that you have allergic response. Once you have an allergic response, it may take 1-2 weeks for the allergic response to diminish. In regards to MRSA, you should consult an infectious disease physician for his/her recommendation.

Answer: MRSA Very start here about your recent experience. MRSA infection is very rare to happen in a mastopexy without implant. Antibiotics is the appropriate course of therapy. I understand that you're allergic to sulfa which would eliminate Bactrim. However there are other courses of drugs that can help you such as clindamycin. I don't feel that an infectious disease doctor or dermatologist would give you any more information compared to what you're plastic surgeon can provide. Wound cultures can tell us the specificity and sensitivity of different bacteria somewhat drugs they are susceptible to its place on the right antibiotic and have no doubt that this infection will heal. Most sutures using this operation are dissolvable so there would not necessitate removal in my practice. Good luck to you and get well soon
