Kybella treatment on the neck / chin. Will there be any black/blue marks or bruises?

 Everybody reacts differently, but Kybella is injected under your skin and so will cause swelling and bruising that should resolve within a few days. To be safe, give yourself a week after your treatment before scheduling a major event like a date. After you see how you react to Kybella, you can modify your downtime for your next treatment. Consulting a board-certified dermatologist will give you a better idea if you are a good candidate for Kybella.

Kybella generally causes swelling, in my experience I haven't seen much bruising if at all. Avoid blood thinners prior to the procedure like aspirin or motrin like medications. It does have some swelling, the level of swelling is different from person to person. It can be minimal to significant. You will know how you swell after your first treatment. You should wait 4-6 weeks before the next treatment. It can be noticeable by others. If you were on a date or with someone you can potentially cover it up, ie a scarf or clothing. It should not interfere with your chewing.Swelling may last up to 3-4 weeks. Thanks.

Every patient reacts differently. There will definitely be some post injection bruising and swelling. For most, this will clear up in ten days to two weeks, but for others, it can take longer. Also, keep in mind that you will need at least 2 Kybella treatments scheduled about 6-8 week apart in order to get your desired results. It takes time, but it is extremely effective for the right patient. 

While Kybella is minimally invasive, it is a series of injections of deoxycholic acid, which means the skin is broken. You will probably be sore and swollen for several days after the procedure. If you bruise easily and heal slowly, you may be uncomfortable for a little longer than that. Give yourself a little “me” time and allow a recovery period after Kybella so you won't have to worry about visible bruises. Thank you for your question kelly.001. Kybella is the first and thus far only FDA approved
non-surgical injectable treatment for the double chin. After a Kybella treatment most people have significant swelling for 1-2 weeks; this means the treatment is working. Some people wear a scarf or turtleneck to cover it. With any injection bruising is possible and usually lasts 1-2 weeks. I recommend that my patients have such a treatment at least 2 weeks before an event that they want to look good for. Please consult with a doctor for specific recommendations. Good luck!

You should plan on the worst case and move forward, meaning assume there will be swelling (which there is with Kybella and sometimes it lasts a couple of days) and some brusing.  You should also understand that kybells is very limited to treating the below chin area where as liposuction can treat the jaw line and neck together to give you a more balanced look.

Kybella is an injectable treatment and so some bruising can be expected post procedure. This bruising can be minimized by icing prior to the treatment. The swelling after Kybella is probably the biggest issue my patients have. The swelling is most severe on the morning after injection and after that it starts improving over the course of 1 week. The Kybella should have no effect on your ability to chew or eat. 

In my personal experience, when planning your schedule, it is safest to expect some small areas of bruising and redness for 1-2 weeks after the injection, particularly at the needle insertion sites. I have had some patients with absolutely no bruising, but everyone's healing ability and vasculature is different. The most common side effect is swelling which tends to be more severe in patients with more fat which is being dissolved. The swelling can last for as long as 4 weeks, but the bulk of the swelling is gone after the first 2. Immediate icing after the procedure and sleeping with your head elevated on a few pillows definitely helps with both bruising and swelling. Hope this helps!!Johnson C. Lee, MD Plastic Surgery

Dear Kelly.001:Swelling after the first Kybella is typically quite visible for two to three days. If you look closely, you can see it for about two weeks but generally after the first few days others don't see it.  With the second treatment, swelling is much less visible.Bruising is very rare, in my experience. Our protocol using potent arnica and bromelain with vigorous icing minimizes both bruising and swelling. If a patient were to experience bruising we would offer laser to quickly resolve the bruising, but have not had to do so as yet with any of the many patients I have treated.All the best,   Dr. Clark
