Steri strips peeled off some skin on areola. Will this heal horribly? (photo)

Question

I am almost 3 weeks out from mastopexy with implants. My seurgon said that I should take my steri strips off because it had been two weeks. I took them off in the shower and i believe it bled under the top layer of skin. It did not split the incions themselves, just the skin on top of my areola. I am wondering if this will make my scarring horrible or significantly worse? Any tips ??

Thank you for your recent question! You should not be concerned about the steri's coming off and causing a bad scar. I would recommend you use a scar recovery gel and silicone gel sheeting to help you obtain the best scars.  Best of luck!

typically a thin outer layer of skin is pulled off when steri strips are removed, Not a big deal, things typically heal very well over the next several months. Only large areas of skin necrosis are of major concern, which you do not have based upon your photos.

Steri-strips do support wound healing, but by 3 weeks most healthy individuals have their basic collagen levels almost back to normal. Your photos demonstrate good healing. I expect it probably stung a little when you removed those steri strips and got some bonus skin off into the bargain, but it doesn’t look like you have anything to worry about with regards to long-term results. At your stage of post-op recovery, it’s normal for things to look a little less than ideal, but all should sort itself out over time. Definitely schedule a follow-up visit with your plastic surgeon if you have any concerns.

Its not uncommon to experience some minor skin irritation when removing the seri-strips. This typically resolves well on its own without any concerns. I typically advise my patients to shower twice daily and dry their breasts with a hair dryer on the lowest setting to ensure the breasts are completely dry. Ask your doctor if he can prescribe an antibiotic cream if the stitch lines become raw looking. A dressing can also be worn - a sanitary napkin stuck to the inside of your compression bra works well.

Thank you for your question.  Based on the provided photo, your incisions appear to be healing quite well.  It is not uncommon for the post operative swelling of the skin under steri strips to cause mild blistering and result in a mild slough of the top layer of skin.  Your scars will likely not be affected by this process, though can take many months to evolve and improve.  I would encourage you to keep an eye on your incisions and alert your plastic surgeon to any changes that might be of concern (i.e. increasing redness or pain, drainage, fever etc.). It is not uncommonto blister under tape or stern-stips or pull a thin layer of superficial skin off when removing tape that is stuck on pretty well. This initaly leaves a raw area but quickly heals. Like any wound it will be pink relative to the surounding normal skin for several months but ultimatley should not leave a bad scar.
